슴베찌르개와 한⋅일 찌르개문화 (Tanged Points and Point Industry in Korea and Japan)

초록

구석기시대의 ‘찌르개’(points)는 끝을 뾰족하게 마련하며, 자루에 끼워 창끝으로 사용하는 도구로 알려져 있다. 한반도에서는 후기구석기시대를 대표하는 찌르개로 ‘슴베찌르개’를 들 수 있으며, 단양 수양개유적의 발굴조사를시작으로 각 지역에서 유적이 확인된다. 최근 자료가 축적되어 석기 제작양상과 문화 특징을 검토하는 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다.
이러한 슴베찌르개 석기군은 인근지역인 일본열도에서도 나타나며, ‘박편첨두기’라는 이름으로 불리고 있다. 박편첨두기는 일본에서 규슈지역을중심으로 특정시기에만 나타나는 한정적인 시공간 분포 양상을 보이며, 기술 형태상 특징으로 보아도 한반도에 등장하는 슴베찌르개와 연관성이 깊은 것으로 지적되어왔다. 이와 함께 다양한 형태의 찌르개 석기군이 일본각 지역에서 확인되는 가운데, 이들에 대한 호칭도 매우 다양하게 사용되고있다. 이들은 ‘나이프형 석기’, ‘창선형 첨두기’ 등 모두 뾰족한 위끝부분(先 端部)과 손질로 마련된 기부(基部)를 가지는 기술 형태를 지니는 점에서 공통된다. 이처럼 한반도와 일본열도에서 후기구석기시대 초기부터 후반기까지 수렵구의 주도적 역할을 맡은 찌르개는 공통된 기술 특징 속에서도 각시기 및 지역에서 다양한 작업 양상을 나타내고 있다.
본 논문에서는 한반도에서 출토된 슴베찌르개의 형태적 특징을 관찰하며, 제작기술과 작업양상을 검토하였다. 이와 함께 다양한 찌르개 석기군이확인되는 일본열도의 시공간별 양상을 파악하며, 양 지역에서 성립된 찌르개문화에 대해 비교 고찰하였다. 결과적으로 각 지역의 찌르개는 기술적 맥락이나 석기 운용방법에서 차이가 있음을 알 수 있었다. 널리 확산된 ‘찌르개문화’를 단순히 하나의 계통으로 연결하는 것이 아니라 다양한 기술 형태적 특징을 지닌 각 석기의 작업공작을 객관적으로 복원하는 연구방향을 제시할 필요가 있다.

영어초록

This paper tries to analyze the tanged point making technology from Korea, and to compare with Japanese area especially Kyushu and North-East are with similar type of points. The "Points" have long been recognized in Paleolithic contexts, and commonly defined that was made pointed by bilateral retouching. The introduction of Upper Paleolithic in Korean Peninsula was begun with appearance of tanged points. The "tanged points"have retouched bottom parts and natural sharp edge without retouch.
The studies of tanged points in Korea have come to the attention after a lot of tanged points were found through excavation of Suyanggae Locality I in 1983. Since then, tanged points have been recognized as a typical hunting tool in the Korean Upper Paleolithic. So through the tanged-points study, we may be possible to understand and analyze the Korean Paleolithic hunting culture more specifically. In that perspective, it is important to make a comparison about knapping technique on flake or blade between the Korean Peninsula and neighboring area. In addition to that, given the different characteristics among tanged points from each site, it can be reliable that the morphological change of tanged-points depends on site function and local environment.
These tanged points studies are discussed not just locally traditional techniques in Korea, but also cultural exchange and relationship with neighboring area, especially Kyushu Island in southwest Japan that is adjacent to the Korean peninsula. And also North-East Japan area have similar type of points called for "bottom-retouched knife-shaped tool". Many Japanese researchers were estimated that the origin of tanged points were derived from knife-shaped tools in Japan, but after beginning of the studies of tanged points from Suyanggae Loc.I, the most of hypotheses were changed that tanged points originated in Korea, and spread the technology throughout Kyushu Island.
Through close observation and analysis by technological and typological attributions, many working processes were revealed. Consequently, tanged points are classified into several types by retouched part on proximal end and one side of edge of blade. And it was also found that production of tanged points is correlated to the form of blade or elongated flake. Moreover, retouched parts on tanged points appear related to tool utilizing method. It is thought that these various types of tanged points reflect adaptation to environmental change.
