서해안지역의 풍어제 무구가 갖는 의의와 특징－현지조사 사례연구를 중심으로－ (The Characteristics and Significance of Shamanic Tools Used for ‘Pungeojae’ in The West Coastal Region: Focusing on The Csaes of Fieldwork)

초록

본 연구는 서해안지역에서 행해지고 있는 풍어제 무구의 양상과 의미를 살펴보고, 이를 통해 지역적 특수성과의 연계성 속에서 풍어제가 갖는 의의 분석 및 풍어제의 특징을 조명해 보는 데에 그 목적이 있었다. 연구대상은 풍어제 전승 지역 중 지역민이 주관하고 巫가 의례를 주재하는 인천의 북성포구․충청도의 안섬․전라도의 법성포를 중심으로 하였다.
서해안지역 풍어제는 마을의 안전과 풍어를 기원한다는 점에서 그 목적은 동일하다. 풍어제에만 나타나는 무구의 양상은 크게 서해안 전역에서 보편적으로 나타나는 것과, 일부지역에서 공통적으로 나타나는 것으로 구분된다. 보편적 상징물로는 제장이나 배에 장식되는 뱃기와 바다에 띄워지는 띠배가 있다. 뱃기는 대체로 그 형태가 유사하며 하당신을 위한 의례에서는 제의가 행해지는 장소마다 이것을 세워 놓고 그 앞에서 의례가 연행되어 장식되는 장엄구로서 기능한다. 이와 달리, 일부지역에서는 한 해의 운세를 점치거나 축원을 받는 상징물로 인식된다. 띠배는 액운을 가져가는 상징물이라는 점에서 공통적인 가치를 지니지만, 그 형태는 여러 다른 양상으로 나타난다. 일부지역에서 공통적으로 나타나는 상징물로는 봉죽과 임경업장군기가 있다. 봉죽과 임경업장군기는 충청도를 포함한 그 북부지역의 풍어제에만 나타나고 있다. 과거 봉죽은 중선 이상의 조기잡이 배들에게 조기만선의 표상이었다. 봉죽은 풍어제에서 일시적으로 종교적 상징물로 전환되었으며, 조기잡이가 한창이던 시기에는 서해안지역 전역에 널리 분포되었을 것으로 해석되었다. 그 근거로 봉죽타령이 황해도에서 전라도일대까지 전승되고 있고, 봉죽놀이가 전라도 일대에 전승되고 다는 점을 들 수 있다. 그러한 맥락에서, 봉죽은 서해안지역 풍어제에서 보편적으로 나타나던 무구 중의 하나였을 것이라는 추정이 가능하다. 봉죽은 과거와 달리 현재는 항시적인 상징물로 풍어제 의례 속에서 전승되고 있다. 임경업장군기는 조기잡이 법을 가르쳐줬다고 믿어지는 임경업장군 神像의 상징물로 제장에 장식된다.
서해안지역은 과거 조기어업문화권역으로서, 이 지역에서 행해지는 풍어제는 조기풍어를 기원하는 목적이 컸으며, 그러한 문화적 기반이 의례적 상징물에 반영된 것으로 분석되었다. 현재 조기어획량의 감소로 과거에 비해 서해안에서 조기잡이는 그다지 큰 비중을 차지하고 있지 못하고 있으나, 여전히 풍어제에서는 조기잡이와 관련된 무구가 전승되고 있다는 점이 서해안지역 풍어제 무구가 갖는 특징 중의 하나라 할 수 있다. 또한 풍어제는 마을주민을 위한 의례로, 그 신앙의 수용대상이 제한적이었다. 근래에 들어, 일부지역에서는 풍어제를 지역축제로 발전시키려는 목적으로 띠배의 외형을 확대하고 그 상징의 수용대상을 외부인에게까지 확장시키고 기원목적 또한 다양화하고 있다. 이는 공동체 신앙이 약화되고 개인의 기복발원이 보다 강조되는 양상으로 변화되는 경향이 풍어제 상징물에 표상된 것으로 이해되었다.

영어초록

This study has aimed at analyzing the significance of ‘Pungeojae’, a shaman ritual held for good fishing in the west coastal region of Korea, in connection with the unique characteristics of the region. At the same time, its aim has been to shed light on the characteristics of ‘Pungeojae’ by investigating the appearance and meaning of shamanic tools used for the ritual. The study was conducted with a focus on the areas where ‘Pungeojae’ has been handed down through generations, including Bukseong Port in Incheon, Ansum in Chungcheong Province, and Beobseongpo in Jeolla Province, where local residents have organized and the shaman has presided over the ritual for a big catch.
‘Pungeojae’ rituals held in the west coastal region have shared the same objective of praying for the safety of the village and a big catch. Some shamanic tools used for ‘Pungeojae’ appear to be universal. However, these tools can be divided into two categories: tools that commonly appear in areas, and tools that are found in specific places. The universal symbols include ‘Jejaong’ (a ritual place), ‘Baetgi’ (a banner to decorate a boat) and ‘Ttibae’ (a miniature straw boat sent out into the sea). In some parts of the region, ‘Bongjuk’ (a bamboo stalk decorated with flowers) and General Lim Kyung-up’s banner have been used as shamanic tools. ‘Baetgi’ banners, which appear universally, have shared similar shapes and temporarily served as reliquaries. ‘Ttibae’ miniature boats have a common value in that they are symbolic objects to take away bad luck, although they have appeared in various forms.
In the past, the west coastal region was a fishing culture zone for yellow corvina. ‘Pungeojae’ rituals held in this region were presumably aimed at praying for a big catch of yellow corvina, and therefore it can be analyzed that this cultural basis was reflected as well in the ritual symbols. It can be said that ‘Bongjuk’ (a bamboo stalk decorated with flowers) and General Lim Kyung-up’s banner are symbolic objects reflecting the yellow corvina fishing culture in the west coastal region. ‘Bongjuk’ stalks have been found only in ‘Pungeojae’ in the northern part of the region, including Chungcheong Province. In the past, ‘Bongjuk’ was recognized as a symbol indicating a mid-and-large-sized fishing boat with a full load of yellow corvina. However, the bamboo stalk was temporarily used as a religious symbol during ‘Pungeojae’. This can be interpreted as that ‘Bongjuk’ were widely distributed across the west coastal region during the peak season of catching yellow corvina. ‘Bongjuk’ is currently recognized as a constant symbol and as a shamanic tool handed down through the religious ritual called ‘Pungeojae’. General Lim Kyung-up’s banner, which is the emblem of General Lim Kyung-up, a god of catching yellow corvina, appears only in ‘Pungeojae’ held in and around Hwanghae Province and Gyeonggi Province. With the catches decreasing in size, yellow corvina fishing does not play a big role anymore on the west coast. However, it is characteristic that the symbols related to yellow corvina fishing are still passed down to ‘Pungeojae’. Recently, with a view to developing ‘Pungeojae’ into a regional festivity, some areas have enlarged the size of ‘Ttibae’, released limits to the object of prayer for villagers, expanded the object to include outsiders, and diversified the purpose of prayer. This can be understood as that the individual’s prayers for good fortune prevail over the weakening faith of the community and that such changes are reflected in the symbols of ‘Pungeojae’.
