한국창작무용에서 김천흥 무용극 「만파식적」이 갖는 의의 (Significance of Kim Cheon-heung’s Dance Drama Manpasikjeok from the Perspective of Original Creative Korean Dance)

초록

한국사회는 1920년대와 1930년대를 지나면서 근대화의 과정을 거치게 되고 예술 장르에서도 근대적 성격이 두드러지게 되었다. 무용도 예외는 아니어서 서양춤의 도입과 서구식 극장의 설립 등 문화시설의 확충은 근대창작무용인 신무용과 무용극이라는 새로운 형태를 발전시키는 계기가 되었다. 1926년경에 이르러 최승희, 조택원 같은 소수의 선각자에 의해 서구적인 신무용이 시도되었으며, 1940년 조택원은 서구식 무용기법에 바탕을 두고 한국적 무용극을 최초로 시도한 「학」을 발표하였다. 그러나 외세의 강요에 의한 문호개방은 주체적인 근대문화의 수용을 가로막았으며, 우리 전통에 대한 철저한 반성의식에서 비롯된 수용도 아닌 상태에서 서양무용의 도입이 불완전하게 이루어졌던 것이었다. 이러한 시대적 흐름은 전통적 기법보다는 서구적 방법을 받아들였으며 1973년에 가서야 국립무용단에 의해 서구의 발레무용극에서 탈피한 한국적 무용극을 모색하게 된다. 이처럼 조택원으로부터 1970년대 초까지의 무용극은 서양식 기법에 기반을 둔 작업이었으나 그 시기에 김천흥이 발표한 무용극인 1969년 「만파식적」은 전통에 근거한 창작세계의 면모를 보인 작품이라는 점에서 주목할 필요가 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 삶과 몸짓 그 자체가 한국춤의 역사라고 할 만큼 전통춤에 근거한 창작, 무용극 창작, 궁중정재 복원 및 재현을 위해 일평생을 살았던 김천흥의 창작무용극 「만파식적」의 분석을 통해 한국무용창작에서의 의의를 찾고자 하였다. 이에 대한 분석결과는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 우리나라에 현재까지 전해진 역사와 전통을 간직한 국악기로서 가장 우수한 악기인 대금을 소재로 한 「만파식적」의 설화를 5막의 무용극 대본으로 작성하였다. 둘째, 전해져 온 춤들을 정리하고 다듬고 간추리거나 전통춤을 취사선택하고 이 자료를 바탕으로 새롭게 창작한 춤으로 사자의 춤, 선의 무, 선녀무, 음양의 조화를 표현한 2인무, 용무, 지친 무리의 춤, 무녀무, 신기의 무, 환희의 춤, 전승무 등이 있었다. 셋째, 궁중춤과 불교의식무용을 소재로 시간성과 형태를 다양화한 선유희와 나비춤, 바라춤, 타주, 목어, 법고춤 그리고 「처용무」, 「학무」, 「연화대무」, 「학처용연화대무」 등이 있었다. 넷째, 전통음악을 춤의 특성에 따라 재편성하고 시간성을 재조정하여 창작한 진양, 도드리, 중머리, 타령, 굿거리, 휘모리, 수제천, 향당, 세영산, 길군악 등의 음악을 사용하였으며, 국립국악원 아악사들이 실제 무용극 공연에서 대합주로 연주했다. 다섯째, 무대장치는 사실적으로 꾸미고 효과음을 사용하여 극적 분위기를 살림으로써 무용극의 내용이 잘 전달되도록 하였다.
이상에서 「만파식적」을 통해 본 김천흥의 창작방식이 신무용과 무용극으로 대표되는 근대무용사에서 유일하게 한국의 전통문화를 기반으로 한 안무였던 점과 그의 안무과정에서 당시 무용가들은 음악을 먼저 작곡한 후에 음악에 맞춰 안무하는 것을 선호했으나 김천흥은 춤을 먼저 완성시킨 후에 작곡자에게 음악을 의뢰하였다는 것, 즉 작곡자에게 각 춤장면의 장단수, 변하는 대목, 속도, 그 춤들에 들어있는 사상과 정신, 내용까지를 자세히 설명하며 춤에 맞는 작곡이 되도록 의뢰함으로써 춤과 음악과의 완벽한 조화를 위해 새로운 작업방식을 선택하여 철저하게 창작에 임했다는 점에서 그 당시 여타의 창작무용극과 차별화 된다는데 그 의의를 찾을 수 있었다.
김천흥(1909~2007)은 이왕직아악부 시절 가무희를 섭렵했을 뿐만 아니라, 민속춤의 대가 한성준과 교분을 나누며 가르침을 받고 당시로서는 드물게 궁중무용과 민속무용의 경계를 넘나들며 창작작업을 할 수 있는 유일무이한 안무가였다. 우리나라의 정서와 정신을 밑바탕에 두고 새로운 음악과 춤을 창작해야 깊이 있는 우리만의 예술로 승화될 수 있다는 예술적 신념을 실천한 김천흥의 창작무용극 「만파식적」은 오늘날 까지 전통춤의 재창조 또는 창작 한국춤이 나아갈 방향의 초석으로서 그 의미 또한 크다 하겠다.

영어초록

Korean society went through the procedure of modernization in 1920s and 30s and modern features also became remarkable in artistic genres. Dancing was no exception and expansion of cultural facilities with introduction of Western dance and establishment of Western theaters served as an opportunity to develop new forms such as new dancing, the original modern dancing, and dance drama. By the year 1926, new Western dancing was attempted by a few pioneers including Choi Seung-hee and Jo Taek-won and Jo Taek-won presented the Crane in which Korean dance drama was first tried based on Western dancing techniques. However, the open door forced by foreign powers hindered autonomous acceptance of modern culture and the Western dancing was imperfectly introduced while the acceptance did not originate from thorough self-examination on our tradition. This stream of the times embraced Western means rather than traditional techniques and it was not until 1973 that National Dance Company came to seek Korean dance drama which broke from the Western ballet dance dramas. In this way, western techniques were foundations from the dance drama of Jo Taek-won to ones in early 1970s and the dance drama work Manpasikjeok presented by Kim Cheon-heung in 1969 is worth noticing in that it demonstrates the world of originality based on tradition. This study, therefore, intends to find significance in creation of Korean dancing through an analysis on Kim Cheon-heung’s original dance drama Manpasikjeok who devoted his life to creation of dance drama, restoration and reproduction of royal dancing and creation based on traditional dance in which life and movement itself is the very history of Korean dance. The analysis result is as follows.
First, the story of Manpasikjeok with Daegeum being its material which is the best instrument that keeps history and tradition handed down up to date is written in the form of dance drama script with five acts. Second, dances handed down are organized and summarized or traditional dances are chosen and there are newly created dances based on the materials including dance of lion, dance of goodness, fairy dance, two-person dance to express harmony of Yin and Yang, dragon dance, dance of the exhausted, dance of shaman, dance of magic, dance of joy, transmitted dance, etc. Third, there are dances which diversify temporality and forms including game of lines, butterfly dance, bara dance, Taju (one form of Buddhist dance), Mokeo (wooden drum in the shape of a carp), dance of Beopgo (drum used in Buddhist rituals), Cheoyong dance, dance of crane, Yeonwhadaemu (one form of court dancing), crane-Cheoyong Yeonwhadaemu, etc. Fourth, music forms created by reorganizing traditional music depending on features of dances and readjusting the temporality e.g. Jinyang, Dodri, Jungmori, Taryeong (traditional Korean ballad), Gutgeori, Hwimori, Sujecheon (one form of royal music), Hyangdang (music of Korea and Tang), Seryeongsan, Gilgunak (music played on a street) etc are used and those forms of music used are played by court musicians of National Gugak Center in the actual dance drama performances as grand ensemble. Fifth, the contents of dance drama are to be well delivered through setting the stage in a realistic manner and properly producing the dramatic atmosphere by using sound effect.
As above, Kim Cheon-heung’s way of creation observed in Manpasikjeok is the only choreography based on Korean traditional culture in history of modern dancing which is represented by new dancing and dance drama. In addition, Kim Cheon-heung commissioned music to a composer after completing the dance first in his procedure of choreographing while other dancers at that time preferred to choreograph to music already completed, which demonstrates that he commissioned music to fit into the dancing by explaining the number of beats in each dance scene, passage subject to change, speed, thoughts, spirits and contents within the dances in detail. This way, he created the work thoroughly by selecting a new way of work for the perfect harmony of dance and music, which displays its significance that the work is differentiated from other original dance dramas at that time.
Kim Cheon-heung (1909~2007) was well-versed in the music and dance of Buddhist ritual practices while being in Iwangjik Aakbu and he was taught by Han Seong-jun, the master of traditional dance, within a good relationship with him and, at the same time, he was the only choreographer who could create works going over the border of royal and traditional dances. As the foundation stone for the recreation of traditional dance or the future direction for original Korean dance, Kim Cheon-heung’s original dance drama 「Manpasikjeok」 where his artistic belief is fulfilled that music and dance newly created only on the basis of the country’s own emotions and spirits can be sublimated to art with depth of our own is evaluated as having a great significance.
