이토 게이치(伊藤桂一)의 전쟁문학 고찰 —강가의 이별(河畔の別れ)을 중심으로— (A Study of the War Literature of Keiichi Ito – Focusing on Farewell to the Riverbank –)

초록

본고는 이토 게이치(伊藤桂一)의 「강가의 이별(河畔の別れ)」을 텍스트로 하여 작품 속에 나타난 일본병사와 위안부의 표상을 살펴보고, 이를 통해 작가의의도를 파악하고자 했다.
중국의 강남지역의 한 군대 주둔지를 둘러싸고 전임 책임자인 오다 중사와후임인 구마이 중사의 인수인계 과정에서 중요한 인물로 등장하는 ‘오스미’라는여성은 인수인계 물품과 같이 취급되면서 거래가 되고 있고, 작품 내에서 감정과고통이 배제된 채 제3자들의 관찰 속에서만 존재한다. 나아가 다수의 일본 병사를상대하는 그녀에 대해 작가는 오히려 ‘1처다부’를 언급하며 피지배자였던 그녀의위치를 지배자로 위치시키며 특권을 누리는 것으로 왜곡시키고 있다.
또한 그녀에 대한 부대원들의 태도에서 자주 언급되는 ‘소중하다‘는 어휘는통상적인 감사나 사랑의 감정이 아니라, 부대원들의 성욕처리를 해 주는 유일한존재의 변심이나 소멸에 대한 두려움과 이를 방지하기 위한 대책으로서 사용되고있다는 점에서 위화감을 느끼게 한다. 성 교섭시의 화대 이상으로 웃돈을 주면서까지 그녀를 소중히 대하는 그들의 행위에서 위안부의 결손을 우려하는 제국 일본의 위안부 관리 실태를 엿볼 수 있었다.
마지막으로 작가는 일본 병사들이 그녀를 주고받는 관계에 대해 ‘하늘이 내린선물’을 양보하는 선후배 관계로 묘사하며 작품의 전체 분위기를 전쟁 미담이나추억담으로 미화시키고 있다. 하지만 그들이 자행하고 있는 것이 명백하게 ‘전시매춘’이자 ‘전시 강간’이라는 점에 대해서는 의도적으로 무시하거나 혹은 인지하지 못하고 있고, 아울러 이를 당연시 하는 가해자 의식마저 느끼게 한다.

영어초록

In this article, I investigate the “Farewell at the Riverbank (河畔の別れ)” written by Ito Keiichi Ito in order to find the representation of the army and the enforced sex slaves at the Japanese Empire age as well as the intention of the writer.
In the book, the background is an army post of the Japan Empire in the south region of China. Sergeant Gumai takes the post over from Sergeant Oda who was the former manager of the post. During the process, a woman named “Osmi” appeared. She was considered as a “resource” of the post and traded like that. She doesn’t have a voice in the book but does exist only in the observations of others. Her emotions and agonies were perfectly eliminated and unheard. The writer mentioned “polyandry” with regard to her position which has to deal with a number of Japanese soldiers sexually every day, and elevated her position from “subordinate” to a “ruler” interpreting her situation as “privileged”.
Oda said everyone in his unit cherished “Osmi” deeply and asked Gumai to take good care of her. Given the circumstances, this is an extreme example of misuse of the phrase “taking care of someone”. As “Osmi” is a sex slave and considered and treated as “resource” belong to the troops, she was looked after preciously as goods, especially she was the only one that satisfies their sexual needs. The soldiers in the unit treated her good because they were afraid of her heart change, rejection, or being removed from their post.
The conversations between Oda and Gumai concluded that Osmi enjoys the life of enforced sexual slave for the army, which indicates the writer’s intention to minimize the war crime committed by them. The words from Oda and Gumai made her more than a sexual slave but a wife for every soldier who is loyal to the country. Since she takes care of the faithful army of the empire and the emperor, her “service” to the soldiers is considered similar to a relationship of a family from their perspectives. Consequently, her agonies and pains as sex slave were volatized and only “loyalty” and “obligation” as citizen of the Japanese Empire remained.
In the end, her “service” was considered as a gift from the heavens and the soldiers warmly disclaimed the opportunities to receive her service each other like a good senior – junior relationship in college. The overall atmosphere of this work is an impressive story or memories at war time. This means that the writer Keiichi Ito not only fails to recognize the “rape crime at war” but also possesses an attitude to justify the crimes as necessary.
