압록강절·제국 노동요·식민지 유행가－그림엽서와 유행가 「압록강절」을 중심으로 (OROKUKOU–BUSHI·Japanese imperialism’s Song of Labor·Colonial Chosun’s popular song－Focusing on the 「Orokukou-bushi」 of postcards and recordings)

초록

일본인이 지은 「압록강절」(鴨綠江節, 오로쿠고부시)은 1920∼30년대 한국, 만주, 일본의 유흥가, 유성기 음반, 라디오방송에서 인기 절정을 구가하던 유행가(신민요)의 일종이다. 백두산∼압록강 일대에서 벌목과 뗏목 운송에 참여하던 한·만·일 벌부, 그들의 가족과 연인, 또는 유흥가 여성들의 고통과 인고, 그리움과 별리를 주로 다뤘다. 백두산과 압록강 일대의 아름다운 풍경과 정취에 감싸인 이 노래들은 그러나 단순히 감정 중심의 유행가에 그치지 않았다. 벌부들의 명랑함과 책임감에 주목함으로써 일제의 위대함을 칭송하고 번영을 기원하는 한편 조선과 만주의 후진성을 대조적으로 드러내는 식민주의적 (무)의식의 표출에도 적극 나섰다. 이런 특질은 일제 문화자본이 발행한 「압록강절」에 대한 몇몇 책자와 다수의 음반, 그리고 그림엽서에 충실히 담겨 있다. 문제는 이 노래의 가창과 청취, 유행에 조선인도 크게 기여했다는 사실이다. 기생 겸업의 여가수들은 일본어 「압록강절」을 그대로 노래하거나 조선민요와 합체하여 불렀다. 물론 그것을 ‘조선화’한다는 의미에서 작사·작곡가들은 조선인의 내면과 정서에 어울리는 ‘압록강 노래’를 여러 편 창작했다. 하지만 대단한 위세를 발휘하던 「압록강절」의 영향과 그늘로부터 벗어나지 못했다. 그런데 다행스럽게도 「압록강절」의 식민주의는 조선독립군의 ‘압록강’ 소재 군가에 의해 그 의미가 어느 정도 상쇄되기에 이른다. 현재의 그 상황은 2000년대 들어 초등학교 음악교과서에 실린 「압록강행진곡」에 의해 대변된다. 하지만 식민의 시공간에서 멀리 떨어진 오늘날의 가치부여는 이 노래를 자칫 쇼비니즘적 민족주의나 애국주의로 함몰시킬 위험성이 크다. 서로 다른 집단이 각자의 이념과 정서를 위해 열창하던 「압록강절」(일본)과 ‘압록강 노래’(조선)의 대타적인 맥락과 지향을 더욱 입체화하는 작업은 그래서 중요하다.

영어초록

「Orokukou-bushi(鴨綠江節, Aprokgangjeol」 written by Japanese shows an aspect of popular songs (new folk songs) which were at the peak of their popularity in the 1920’s to 30’s in adult entertainment districts, gramophone records, or radio broadcasts in Korea, Manchuria, and also Japan. It mainly deals with the pain, hardships, longing, and parting of Korean, Manchurian, and Japanese wood workers engaged in logging and raft transportation around Baekdusan and Aprokgang, their families and lovers, or women working in adult entertainment districts. These songs depicting the beautiful scenery and mood of Baekdusan and Aprokgang, however, are not just popular songs dealing with their sentiments merely. They focus on wood workers’ delightfulness and sense of responsibility and praise the greatness of the Japanese Empire and wish for its prosperity while expressing aggressively colonial (sub)consciousness about the backwardness of Chosun and Manchuria contrastive to that. These characteristics are faithfully included in some books, many albums, and picture postcards about 「Aprokgangjeol」 issued by the Japanese Empire with its cultural capital. But the problem is the fact that to the singing, mood, and popularity of these songs, Chosun people also contributed enormously. Female singers who were also a gisaeng either sang 「Aprokgangjeol」 in Japanese just as it was or in combination with Chosun’s folk songs. Of course, in a sense of making it ‘Chosunized’, lyricists and composers created several pieces of ‘Aprokgang songs’ that went well with Chosun people’s mind and sentiment. However, they still failed to be freed from the influence or shade of 「Aprokgangjeol」 that was excessively influential then. Yet, fortunately, the meaning of colonialism found in 「Aprokgangjeol」 came to be set off to some extent due to military songs about ‘Aprokgang’ sung by Chosun’s army for national independence. The situation is represented by 「The Aprokgang March」 contained in elementary school music textbooks from the 2000’s. However, if we give too much value to it in this age that is far from the time and space of colonialism, it may reversely work as riskiness to sink the song into either chauvinistic nationalism or patriotism. Therefore, it is an important task to consider the context of treating others and pursuit of 「Aprokgangjeol」 (Japan) and ‘Aprokgang Songs’ (Chosun) sung passionately by different groups of people for the sake of their own ideology and sentiment.
