『俛門承敎錄』 연구 -江右地域 俛宇學團 분석을 중심으로- (A Study on 『MyeonmoonSeunggyorok』-Focusing on the Analysis of the Myeonwoo cademic Circle in the Gangwoo Region-)

초록

본고는 19-20세기 江右地域에 분포된 俛宇學團의 존재 양상을 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 『俛門承敎錄』에 기록된 771명의 문인 데이터를 바탕으로 통계적 분석을 시도하였다.
강우 지역은 인조반정 이후 한동안 학문적 침체기를 겪었으나, 19세기에 이르러 성재학단·한주학단·노사학단 등 여러 학문 공동체가 형성되며 학문적 부흥을 맞이했다. 특히 한주학단을 계승한 면우학단은 강우 지역을 기반으로 활발한 학문 활동을 전개하였으며, 더 나아가 당대 지식인으로서 현실 문제에 적극적으로 대응하였다.
면우학단이 형성될 수 있었던 배경에는 면우의 학문적 성향과 학자적 위상, 활발한 교유 활동, 그리고 유학자로서의 현실 인식이 크게 작용하였으며, 이러한 요인들로 인해 많은 문인들이 그의 문하에 모이게 되었다. 특히 면우는 퇴계 학맥에 속하면서도 지역 선현인 남명을 존숭하여 남명학의 복원과 규명에 힘썼다. 이러한 노력은 강우 지역 남인 계열의 남명 연원가들이 그의 문하에 입문하는 데 중요한 계기가 되었을 것이다.
『면문승교록』은 1974년 삭녕 최씨 집안의 주도로 연활자본으로 간행되었다. 문인들은 나이순으로 기록되었으며, 자·본관성씨·거주지·생년·급문년·수학장소·몰년·가족관계·벼슬 등 총 9가지 항목에 걸쳐 개인정보가 작성되었다.
본 연구에서는『면문승교록』에 기록된 본관성씨·거주지·입문시기·생년분포를 바탕으로 면우학단에 대한 통계적 분석을 시도하였다. 분석 결과, 면우학단은 강우 지역에 집중적으로 분포하였으며, 그중에서도 단성, 거창, 삼가, 진주 순으로 문인의 수가 많았다. 단성과 삼가 지역에서 문인의 수가 많은 현상은 박치복과 관련이 있는 것으로 보이며, 거창 지역은 면우의 다전 거주와 밀접한 연관이 있었다. 진주의 경우, 진양 하씨와 관련성을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한, 시기적으로는 면우가 다전에 거주했던 시기에 문인의 수가 급격히 증가하였다.
면우학단은 19-20세기 조선 유학의 사상사적 발전을 도모했을 뿐만 아니라, 유림 독립운동을 주도한 점에서 한국 유학사에서 중요한 위상을 차지하고 있다. 본 연구를 통해 ‘면우학’의 정립 가능성을 모색하고, 공백으로 남아있는 20세기 유학사 연구에 기여할 수 있기를 기대한다.

영어초록

This paper aims to examine the characteristics and presence of the Myeonwoo Hakdan (俛宇學團) in the Gangwoo (江右) region during the 19th and 20th centuries. For this purpose, statistical analysis was conducted based on data from 771 scholars recorded in the Myeonmun Seunggyorok (俛門承敎錄).
The Gangwoo region experienced a period of academic stagnation following the Injo Restoration. However, by the 19th century, it witnessed a revival of scholarly activity with the formation of several academic communities, including the Seongjae Hakdan, Hanjoo Hakdan, and Nosa Hakdan. Among these, the Myeonwoo Hakdan, which inherited the legacy of the Hanjoo Hakdan, engaged in vibrant scholarly activities in the Gangwoo region and further actively addressed contemporary social issues as intellectual leaders of the time.
The formation of the Myeonwoo Hakdan was influenced by several factors, including Myeonwoo's academic orientation, his status as a respected scholar, his extensive social network, and his pragmatic awareness as a Confucian thinker. These elements attracted numerous scholars to his tutelage. Notably, while Myeonwoo belonged to the Toegye school of thought, he deeply revered the local scholar Nammyung and dedicated himself to restoring and advancing Nammyung studies. This effort significantly contributed to attracting members of the Nammyung lineage within the Namin faction in the Gangwoo region to his academic circle.
The Myeonmun Seunggyorok was published in 1974 under the initiative of the Saknyeong Choi family. Scholars were recorded in chronological order of age, with personal information documented across nine categories: courtesy name, family origin (bon-gwan), place of residence, year of birth, year of joining the school, place of study, year of death, familial relationships, and official positions.
This study conducted a statistical analysis of the Myeonwoo Hakdan based on data from the Myeonmun Seunggyorok, focusing on family origin, place of residence, time of entry, and birth year distribution. The analysis revealed that the Myeonwoo Hakdan was primarily concentrated in the Gangwoo region, with the largest number of scholars hailing from Danseong, Geochang, Samga, and Jinju, in that order. The high number of scholars from Danseong and Samga appears to be linked to Park Chi-bok, while Geochang’s prominence is closely tied to Myeonwoo’s residence in Dajeon. In the case of Jinju, a connection with the Jin Yang Ha clan was identified. Furthermore, the number of scholars increased sharply during the period when Myeonwoo resided in Dajeon.
The Myeonwoo Hakdan not only contributed to the ideological development of Confucianism in the 19th and 20th centuries but also played a leading role in the Confucian independence movement, thereby holding a significant position in the history of Korean Confucianism. Through this study, it is hoped that the concept of "Myeonwoo Studies" will be established, contributing to the relatively underexplored field of 20th-century Confucianism.
