영산강유역 고분연구의 검토 -고분의 개념, 축조방법, 변천을 중심으로- (Examination of the Studies on the Mounded Tombs in the Yeongsan River Basin -Focussing on the concepts, construction methods, and changes of the mounded tombs-)

초록

최근 호남지역에서 분구묘가 고분을 대신하여 사용하는 경향이 있다. 그러나 필자는 분구묘라는 용어가 고분을 대신하는 적절한 용어로 보지 않는다. 분구묘는 그 개념에서도 문제가 있지만 호남지역의 고분을 모두 분구묘로 가정한다면 그로 인하여 고분의 발생과 변천과정을 제대로 설명할 수 없기 때문이다. 고분은 사회의 계층화가 뚜렷이 나타나는 시기, 즉 삼국시대의 무덤을 포괄적으로 지칭하는 용어이고, 고분의 실질적인 명칭은 매장주체부를 근거로 제시되어야 할 것이다.
영산강유역 고분의 변천을 살펴보면, 처음 등장한 고분은 3세기 말경의 목관고분과 옹관고분이다. 영산강 중·하류에서는 옹관고분이 주로 분포하지만 그 나머지 지역에서는 목관고분이 지속적으로 축조되었다. 그리고 5세기 말경에 석실분이 출현하면서 전방후원형 고분도 나타나지만 6세기 중엽부터는 백제식 석실분으로 변화되었다.
영산강유역 고분의 특징은 다음과 같다. 먼저 다양한 주구를 가지고 있다. 특히 제형(사다리꼴)과 전방후원형은 다른 지역에서 찾아볼 수 없는 형태이다. 다음은 고분으로 발전되면서 수평적인 확장과 수직적인 확장이 이루어진다. 그리고 영산강 중하류지역에 한정되는 옹관고분에 비하여 목관고분의 분포가 훨씬 넓다. 또한 한 봉분에 여러 매장시설을 설치하거나 매장시설이 지상식이라는 점이다.
이러한 독특한 전통은 석실분이 등장한 이후에도 지속되었다. 따라서 분구묘가 영산강유역 고분의 특징을 대변하거나 키워드로 볼 수 없으며 나주 복암리 3호분과 같은 고분이 이를 상징한다고 볼 수 있다. 고분연구가 어느 특성을 부각시키기 위해 노력하기 보다는 이를 통해 과거 문화의 복원에 치중하여야 할 것이다.

영어초록

Recently in the Honnam region, there is a tendency to use Bungumyo (tombs with mound) instead of Gobun (mounded tombs). I believe Bungumyo is an inappropriate substitution for Gobun. Bungumyo itself is not a well defined concept, moreover, assuming all the tombs in the Honnam region as Bungumyo is not sufficient enough to explain the occurrence and changes made on the mounded tombs. Gobun is a comprehensive word that includes mounded tombs built in Three Kingdoms Period, when social classification was established. The actual names for the mounded tombs should be base on the subject buried.
Looking into the changes of mounded tombs in Yeongsan River basin, wooden-coffin tombs and Jar-coffin tombs appeared in the end of 3rd century. Jar-coffin tombs were limited to the mid and downstream of Yeongsan River, but in rest of the region, wooden-coffin tombs were widely distributed. By the end of 5th century, stone-chamber tombs as well as keyhole shaped tombs appeared, but they went through transition to Baekje style stone-chamber tombs after the mid 6th century.
The mounded tombs in the Yeongsan River basin have following characteristics. They have various shapes of ditch around the tombs. Especially, trapezoid shape and keyhole shape are only found in this region. Development of tombs brought horizontal and perpendicular expansions. Wooden-coffin tombs were more widely distributed while Jar-coffin tombs are limited to the mid and downstream of Yeongsan River. Mass burials in a single mound with a ground level burial also appeared.
These characteristics continued after the appearance of stone-chambers. Therefore, Bungumyo is not the representation or a keyword appropriate for mounded tombs of the Yeongsan River basin, but the tombs such as Bokamri 3rd tomb is the symbol of that. I believe that the studies of mounded tombs is about reconstructing the past culture rather than trying to expose single specific characteristic.
