초록

이 글은 19세기 후반-20세기 초 江右 지역에 유행처럼 일었던 존주의식 현양 활동을 중심으로 강우지식인의 의식세계를 살펴 본 것이다.
존주의식은 임진란 이후부터 중앙정계를 중심으로 지속되었던 지성사의 한 중심축이었다. 시대가 흐를수록 이에 매몰되어 근대의 문턱을 넘지 못한 족쇄였다는 지적도 있었지만, 19세기까지도 조선사회의 주류를 차지하였다. 중앙을 중심으로 진행되던 존주의식 현양 활동이 지방에 끼친 영향의 상관성 연구가 전무했었는데, 본고가 강우지역의 세 사례를 통해 살펴보았다.
이 시기 강우지역에는 수많은 학자가 활동하였고, 그들은 여전히 명나라 毅宗의 ‘崇禎’ 연호를 사용하고 있었다. 이러한 단편적인 현상만으로도 시대를 제대로 읽지 못한 전근대적 사고라 비판받기도 하였다. 그러나 삼전도 치욕 이후 형성된 북벌론 또는 대명의리가 시대의 흐름에 맞춰 당대의 시대논리로 변모해 왔듯, 이 시기 강우지식인들도 자기 시대의 논리에 맞게 이를 받아들였을 뿐이었다.
예컨대 남평문씨 가문의 大明花 현양과 朴震英 추숭으로 인해 강우지역에 일었던 존주의식 현창 활동은, 오랜 기간 소외되어 있던 지방사족이 顯祖를 선양하고 가문의 위상을 강화하려는 절박함에 의해 도출된 그들 나름의 명분이었다. 鄭蘊과 朴明榑를 통해 某里나 弄月亭에서 갈구했던 지식인의 自意識 또한 그 시대가 낳은 역사적 산물이었다. 한말에 몰아닥친 외세의 침략과 일제의 야욕, 이로 인해 해체되어 가는 전통유학의 봉건적 질서 등 내우외환의 위기감이 고조되던 이 시기에 정온 등의 춘추대의 정신이 대안으로 떠올랐던 것이다. 강우지역의 존주의식 현창 양상은 강우학자들이 당대 지식인으로서 자기 시대를 헤쳐 나가는 최선의 선택이자 기회였던 것이다.

영어초록

This study presents an investigation into the conscious world of Kangwoo(江右) intellectuals around the activities to exalt Jonjuuishik(尊周意識) that swept over the Kangwoo region like a vogue from the latter half of the 19th century to the early 20th century.
Jonjuuishik was a central axis in the history of mentality that maintained around the central political circles since Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592. Some point out that it was buried in them over time and eventually failed to cross over the threshold of modern times in shackles, but there is no doubt that it was part of the mainstream of Joseon society until the end of the 19th century. Considering that there was no research on the influences of the activities of Jonjuuishik, which used to proceed only in the central region, on the local regions, the present study looked into them with three cases.
During the period, there were many scholars active in the Kangwoo region, and they were still using the era name of Yi Zong of Ming Dynasty, namely ‘Chongzhen.’ They were criticized for being unable to read the times right and trapped in pre-modern thinking just with such a fragmentary phenomenon. However, the intellectuals of the Kangwoo region just accepted it according to the logic of their times just like the plan for northern expedition or Daemyeonguiri formed after the Samjeondo Humiliation had become the logic of the times according to time.
For instance, the phenomenon of Jonjuuishik caused in the Kangwoo region by the activities to exalt the Ming dynasty flower and worship Park Jin-yeong in the Nampyeong Mun family was a cause of their own developed by their desperate efforts to heighten their excellent ancestry and strengthen their family status as local 사족 after many years of alienation. The sense of identity of intellectuals sought after at Mori or Nongwoljeong through Jeong On and Park Myeong-bu was a historical product of the times, as well. The spirit of Chunchudaeui of Jeong On and others emerged as an alternative when the crisis of internal and external trouble increased including the invasion of foreign power, the ambitions of Japanese Empire, and the destructed feudal order of traditional Confucianism at the end of Joseon. The exaltation phenomenon of Jonjuuishik in the Kangwoo region was the best choice and opportunity to go through the times for Kangwoo scholars as the intellectuals of the times.
