근대전환기 강우지역 학맥 연구의 현황과 과제 (Current Situation and Tasks of Studies on the Scholarly Lineage in the Gangwoo Region in the Modern Transition Period)

초록

본고는 근대전환기 강우지역 학술의 全貌를 파악하기 위한 기초 작업의 하나로, 강우지역에서 활동했던 8개 학파의 학맥에 관한 연구성과를 살폈다. 당시 강우지역에서 활동한 8개 학파는 본디 강우 학술의 근원인 南冥 曺植의 남명학파 외에도 퇴계학맥인 定齋 柳致明·寒洲 李震相·性齋 許傳의 학파, 그리고 율곡학맥인 蘆沙 奇正鎭·淵齋 宋秉璿·艮齋 田愚·華西 李恒老의 학파를 일컫는다. 이들 학파는 전국 각지에서 각자의 학설을 주장하며 문인들을 회합하고 학술을 전개하였다.
남명학의 본산인 강우지역은 인조반정으로 남명학파가 몰락하면서 쇠퇴의 길에 접어들었고, 수백 년의 침체기를 거쳐 근대전환기에 이르러서야 이들 8개 학파에 의해 강우지역 학술이 다시 활기를 띄었다. 이들 강우문인은 당색과 학파를 초월해 여러 학파를 넘나들며 학술적 교류를 진행하였고, 이들의 직전문인을 넘어 再傳-三傳-四傳 문인으로 계승해 나갔다. 근대전환기 강우지역에서 행해진 이러한 학술 동향은 우리 학술사에서 전례가 없던 독특한 현상이었다.
그러나 이들 학파의 학맥 연구는 그동안 매우 미미하게 진행되었고, 그마저도 학파 간 연구의 격차가 매우 심하였다. 성재학파와 노사학파는 연구가 제법 축적된 반면, 정재학파와 한주학파는 여전히 미미한 상황이며, 화서학파는 아직 시작도 않은 단계라 할 수 있다. 근년에 간재학파에 관한 연구가 일어나고 있는 건 긍정적인 반응으로 받아들일 만하다.
이처럼 학맥 연구가 저조한 요인은 이 연구를 위한 텍스트인 門人錄 또는 師友錄 확보의 어려움, 이들 자료에 수록된 수백 명의 문인에 관한 기초자료 조사의 어려움 등이 있고, 무엇보다 이러한 연구는 개별 연구가 아닌 공동연구로 가능한데 이에 종사할 연구자의 부재 등을 꼽을 수 있다. 따라서 이에 대한 인식 전환이 우선되어야 하며, 나아가 물리적 행정적 여건이 호전되고 충분한 연구자 확보가 가능할 때 본 연구는 본격적인 궤도에 오를 수 있을 것이다. 이는 매우 어려운 작업이며, 그렇더라도 반드시 중단 없이 수행되어야 할 작업이다. 근대전환기 강우지역에서 행해진 여러 학파의 다양한 활동과 학맥의 전승이 제대로 밝혀져야 강우 학술의 전모를 파악할 수 있기 때문이다.

영어초록

This paper examined the results of studies on the scholarly lineage of eight School that were active in the Gangwoo region as part of the basic work to understand the entire picture of scholarship in the Gangwoo region in the modern transition period. The eight School that were active in the Gangwoo region at that time refer to the Nammyeong School of Nammyeong(南冥) Jo Sik(曺植), the origin of Gangwoo scholarship, as well as the learning groups of Jeongjae(定齋) Yu Chi-myeong(柳致明), Hanju(寒洲) Lee Jin-sang(李震相), and Seongjae(性齋) Heo Jeon(許傳) from the Toegye scholarly lineage, and Nosa(蘆沙) Gi Jeong-jin(奇正鎭), Yeonjae(淵齋) Song Byeong-seon(宋秉璿), Ganjae(艮齋) Jeon Woo(田愚), and Hwaseo(華西) Lee Hang-ro(李恒老) from the Yulgok scholarly lineage. These School insisted on their own theories, held meetings with scholars, and developed scholarship all over the country. The Gangwoo region, the home of Nammyeong studies, fell into decline after the fall of the Nammyeong School due to the Injo Coup, and after hundreds of years of stagnation, the scholarship in the Gangwoo region was revived by these eight schools only when the modern transition period came. These Gangwoo literary scholars transcended partisan coloring and schools to engage in academic exchanges across various schools, and the academic exchanges passed down to their immediate successors followed by secondary, tertiary, and quarternary successors. The academic trend that took place in the Gangwoo region during the modern transition period was a unique phenomenon that had no precedent in our academic history. However, studies on the scholarly lineage of these School were conducted very rarely, and even such studies showed very large gaps between School. While studies on the Seongjae School and the Nosa School have been accumulated considerably, studies on the Jeongjae School and the Hanju School are still insignificant, and no study on the Hwaseo School has begun yet. The fact that studies on the Ganjae School have been conducted in recent years can be accepted as a positive response.
Main causes of the scarcity of studies on the scholarly lineage include the difficulty of securing the records of literary scholars(門人錄) or records of alumni(師友錄), which are texts for such studies, the difficulty of investigating basic data on the hundreds of scholars included in these materials, and above all, the absence of researchers who can engage in such studies, despite that such studies are possible in the form of joint studies, not individual studies. Therefore, a change of recognition of such studies should occur first, and furthermore, such studies can get on a full-fledged track when physical and administrative conditions improve, and sufficient researchers can be secured. This is a very difficult task, but it is a task that must be carried out without a break because the entire picture of Gangwoo scholarship can be understood only when the various activities of the various School and the transmission of the scholarly lineage in the Gangwoo region that were carried out during the modern transition period are properly revealed.
