冬景山水畵의“雪江買魚”畵題 (Buying Fish on a Snowy River: An Enduring Theme of Winter Landscape)

초록

그림의 내용과 성격을 말해주는 화제는 그림이 그려진 시기에 회화의 주제와 양식이 지녔던 의미를파악하고 제작배경을 이해하는 데에 도움을 주지만 현존하는 작품 중 화가나 동시대인이 화제를 밝힌 경우는 매우 드물다. 따라서 작가가 의도한 그림의 주제가 시간의 흐름에 따라 잊힌 경우가 많아작품을 정확하게 이해하는 데 어려움을 주기도 한다. 현존하는 동경산수화에 반복적으로 등장하는특정한 인물도상의 의미를 파악하려는 시도에서 비롯된 이 논문은 송대에서 청대에 이르기까지 다양한 계층의 화가들에 의해 여러 가지 화풍으로 그려진“雪江買魚”라는 화제를 묘사한 작품을 통해산수화의 화제가 어떠한 과정을 거쳐 성립되었으며 어떠한 양상으로 그려졌는지를 고찰하였다.
현존작품과 문헌기록을 통해“설강매어”의 화제는 산수화가 가장 중요한 화목으로 대두되고문학과 회화의 이상적인 상관관계를 중시한 문인화이론이 성립된 시기에 唐代시인 杜荀鶴의〈冬末同友人汎瀟湘〉의 시구를 묘사한 詩意山水圖로 그려지기 시작했고 여러 폭으로 이루어진 四時山水圖의 겨울 장면에 사용되면서 동경산수화의 보편적인 화제로 정착되었음이 파악된다.
계절감이 확실하게 묘사된 두순학의 시는 겨울 산수의 표현에 효과적으로 운용할 수 있는 내용이고 겨울의 情景이 가장 잘 드러나는 구절에서 비롯된“설강매어”는 화가의 개성과 시각적 해석에 따라 자유롭게 화면을 구성할 수 있는 무난하고 융통성 있는 화제가 되었다. 남송대 문인문화의폭넓은 확산을 배경으로 시의도가 유행하면서 馬遠, 馬和之, 李東등 주로 畵院內外에서 활동한 직업화가들이 즐겨 그렸고 원대를 거쳐 명·청대에는 文徵明과 趙左, 王 등의 문인화가를 비롯하여절파계의 직업화가들에 의해 동경산수의 계절감을 뚜렷하게 표현하는 화제로 자리 잡게 되었으며화면에 시구가 적혀 있지 않아도 시의 내용을 나타내는 특징적인 인물의 등장을 통해 두순학의 시와 바로 연결될 정도의 익숙한 화제로 여겨졌음을 알 수 있다.
하나의 화제가 수백 년 간 다양한 계층의 화가에 의해 지속적으로 그려졌음은 특정한 화제가지닌 보편적인 성격과 함께 강한 전통성을 말해주는 것이며 그러한 화제의 典故와 성립과정을 규명하는 것은 작품의 주제와 양식적 발전은 물론 산수화 제작의 사회적, 문화적 배경을 다각적으로 조명하는 데 도움을 줄 것이다. 나아가 이러한 연구는 현재 막연히〈冬景山水圖〉나〈雪景山水圖〉로 전하는 산수화의 정확한 주제를 파악하여 작품을 보다 완전하게 이해하는 근거를 마련해 줄 것으로기대한다.

영어초록

To know the title of a painting is sometimes essential for correctly understanding its theme and style. Close examination of how the painting came to have such a title is of great importance in illuminating the significance it had in its own time and the historical background of its creation.
However, few surviving paintings from historical times have a stated title, whether declared by their authors or the contemporaries of the authors. Also, the title of a painting, even if well known in its time, can become forgotten subsequently, making it difficult for future generations to accurately understand its subject matter. This article started out as an attempt to assess the significance of a specific iconography of figures that is recurrent in Chinese winter landscape paintings over several centuries. ‘Xuejiang maiyu (Buying fish on a snowy river)’is a theme treated by many Chinese painters of the Song to Qing dynasties from various backgrounds, in a myriad of different styles. This article explores how this landscape painting theme came to be established and how it was rendered by painters of successive generations.
Extant historical records and paintings indicate that the theme of‘buying fish on a snowy river’made its debut during the Song dynasty as a theme of poetic landscape painting visually rendering the content of verses from the poem entitled‘Gathering of Friends on a Late Winter River (冬末同友人汎瀟湘)’by the late Tang poet Du Xunhe(846-904). The Song dynasty was a period during which landscapes imposed themselves as a major painting genre. It was also during this period that the basic theoretical framework of literati painting as a genre in which literature and painting were brought together in an idealized, mutually-enriching relationship came to be established. The theme of‘buying fish on a snowy river’was later used in multi-panel landscapes depicting images of the four seasons, and it, thereafter, became one of the most popular winter landscape themes.
Du Xunhe’s poem, having a distinct seasonal flavor, easily lent to pictorial representation in the form of a winter landscape. The‘Buying fish on a snowy river,’inspired by a verse of this poem which strikingly captures the mood of winter, was a theme general enough to allow artists to give free reign to their visual imagination and flexibly compose a scene, and became, for this reason, one of the most accessible and frequently used winter themes. During the Southern Song dynasty when poetic paintings gained popularity under the growing influence of literati painting,many professional painters who were either court painters or were associated with them, such as Ma Yuan, Ma Hezhi, and Li Dong treated the theme of‘buying fish on a snowy river.’In later times, from the Mongol Yuan dynasty to the Ming and Qing dynasties, it further inspired literati painters like Wen Zhengming, Zhao Zuo, Wang Hui, and professional painters of the Zhe school,who appreciated the distinct wintry mood that this theme can evoke. This theme became eventually so popular that even when no verse is present on a painting, educated beholders were able to recognize certain well-known iconographic characters and link them to the poem of Du Xunhe.
When a painting theme has had an enduring currency over several hundred years, treated by painters of various backgrounds, this is a stirring testimony about its universal appeal as well as its ability to take root as a lasting tradition. An understanding of how such a theme emerged and developed can not only help us gain a better picture of how landscape paintings evolved over time in terms of theme and style, but also cast new light on the social and cultural background to the historical production of landscape paintings. Research in this direction, meanwhile, can allow one to precisely pinpoint the subject matter of some of the landscapes thus far designated by broad generic titles such as‘winter landscape’or‘snowy landscape’and, thereby, develop a more complete understanding of a painting.
