영산강유역 송국리식 토기의 특징과 변천 (Characteristics and Changes in Songguk-ri Type Pottery in the Yeongsan River Basin)

초록

본고의 목적은 송국리식 토기를 대상으로 영산강유역 송국리유형의 지역성과 변화상을 살펴보는데 있다. 이를 위해 우선 영산강유역 송국리식 토기의 성형 및 정면방식과 각 기종・형식 별 특징을 관찰하였다. 다음으로 송국리식 토기의 시간성을 검토하기 위해 영산강유역 및 주변 일대 유적의 분포와 배치구조, 주거 형식, 유구 간 중첩 양상을 분석하고 토기 기종 별 선후 및 공반관계, 세부 속성의 변화상을 살펴보았다.
영산강유역의 청동기시대 중기는 주거 형식과 토기 제작 기술체계의 변화, 신기종의 등장과 같은 획기를 기준으로 크게 2단계로 나눌 수 있으며 토기 세부 속성과 형식의 존속기간, 표지유물을 참고하여 다시 각 2분기로 세분가능하다. Ⅰ단계는 휴암리식 주거지가 조성되는 시점으로 기원전 9～8C를 상한으로 한다. 1기에는 전기 유물이 일부 확인된다. 토기는 축약된 굽에 나팔형 또는 난형 기형의 발형과 직립구연의 호형, 완형토기가 출토된다. 내외면에서는 목리, 손누름, 물손질 등의 정면흔이 관찰된다. 2기 또한 휴암리식이 주를 이루지만 유적에 따라 말각방형 주거지와 같은 평면 형태상의 변이가 나타나기도 한다. 토기는 기형이나 기종에 있어 뚜렷한 변화는 없지만 축약 정도가 약해지고 두께가 얇아진 저부나 희미하게 빗질 정면된 동체가 발견되기도 한다. Ⅱ단계에 들어서면 영산강 전역에 걸쳐 송국리식 주거지가 본격적으로 축조되는데 일부 지역에서는 휴암리식 주거지가 존속한다. 호형과 발형토기의 기형은 장동형 또는 구형으로 변화한다. 축약굽은 대부분 평저 또는 말각평저로 변화하며, 표면에는 빗질 정면이 정연하게 이루어진다. 또한 전용 뚜껑이 새로이 등장하여 송국리식 토기 기종의 하나로 자리 잡는다. 1기와 2기는 뚜껑의 형식 변화를 기준으로 분기할 수 있는데 그 시점은 기원전 5C 즈음으로 추정된다. 특히 2기는 점토대토기관련 유물이 공반하는 시기로 기존 편년 틀과 최근의 탄소연대를 감안하면 기원전 4C 중반을 안정적인 하한으로 볼 수 있다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to investigate regional characteristics and changes in Songguk- ri assemblages, with a particular focus on Songguk-ri type pottery in the Yeongsan River Basin. First, the form, surface treatment techniques, and characteristics of each type of Songguk- ri type pottery from the Yeongsan River Basin were examined. Next, in order to investigate the chronology of Songguk-ri type pottery, the distribution and arrangement of sites in the Yeongsan River Basin and surrounding areas and the types of dwellings and the presence of overlapping features at those sites were analyzed, and the temporal relationships and contemporaneity of pottery types and changes in detailed attributes were examined.
Using major developments such as changes in dwelling types and pottery-production techniques and the appearance of new pottery types as criteria, two chronological periods can be distinguished. Additionally, the temporal persistence of certain detailed attributes and certain pottery types and the presence of diagnostic artifacts allowed each period to be further divided into two phases. Period I begins between the 8th and 9th centuries BC with the construction of the Hyuam-ri type dwelling. In Phase 1, some Early-period artifacts have been discovered. Bugle-shaped pottery with protruding bases, egg-shaped pots, straight-rimmed jars, and bowlshaped pottery are all found in this phase. Traces of surface treatments including wood-scrubbing, hand-pressing, and water treatments are observed on the inner walls and surfaces of vessels. In Phase 2, Hyuam-ri type dwellings continue to dominate, but some variations, such as rectangular dwellings with rounded corners, can be observed at some sites. There is little change in forms and types of pottery, however, the protruding base becomes less pronounced, the vessel walls become thinner, and thin bases and faint traces of combing can be seen on the bodies of some vessels. In Period II, Songguk-ri type dwellings become prevalent throughout the Yeongsan River Basin area, although some Hyuam-ri type dwellings continue to be constructed. The jar and pot-type vessels are replaced with long-bodied and globular vessels.
Furthermore, protruding vessel bases are mostly replaced with flat bases and flat bases with rounded edges, and traces of combing become apparent on the surfaces of vessels. Furthermore, vessel lids, a characteristic of one type of Songguk-ri type pottery, first appear. Phases 1 and 2 of this period, which are divided at about the 5th century BC, can be distinguished by vessel lid types. In Phase 2, artifacts related with pottery with clay-band rims become particularly prominent, and considering previous chronologies and recently obtained radiocarbon dates, the lower limit for Phase 2 can be safely set at the mid-4th century BC.
