영산강유역 출토 마구의 성격과 의미 (Characteristics and Meaning of Horse Tacks Unearthed from the Yeongsan River Basin)

초록

영산강유역에서 출토된 마구는 1982년 해남 월송리 조산고분에서 당시에는 보기 드문 ‘f’자형판비와 검릉형행엽을 세트로 하는 장식마구가 출토되면서 주목받기 시작하였다.
이후 1991년 함평 예덕리 신덕고분에서 표비와 함께 연화문을 장식한 반구형운주가, 1996년 나주 복암리 3호분 96석실에서 신라계 십자문심엽형판비와 삼엽문심엽형행엽이, 최근에는 나주 정촌고분 1호 석실에서 영산강유역에서 유례를 찾아보기 어려운 복환판비를 비롯하여 ‘f’자형판비와 목심등자, 철제등자 등으로 구성된 마구가 한꺼번에 출토되어 국내외 연구자들의 이목을 끌었다.
이에 본고에서는 현재까지 영산강유역에서 출토된 마구를 집성하고, 동 시기 한반도와 일본열도 등 동아시아 세계의 여러 지역에서 출토된 자료와 비교·검토하여 그 형식학적인 위치와 연대, 계보, 그리고 피장자의 성격과 대외 교류와 교섭의 문제에 대해서 검토하였다.
그리하여 영산강유역 출토 마구는 기본적으로 제어용·안정용·장식용 마구 등으로 구성된 기승용 마구임을 확인하고, 이를 근거로 영산강유역에서는 5세기 말~6세기에 기마문화가 성행했음을 밝혔다.
그리고 그 구성과 재질 등에서 동 시기 신라와 가야의 고분에서 출토된 마구와 마찬가지로 실용적·무장적·위세품적인 성격을 가진 마구로 이해하여 그 피장자를 무장적·정치적인 성격이 강한 재지수장 또는 유력자로 추정하였다.
아울러 영산강유역에서 출토된 마구의 대다수가 외래계 마구인 점에 주목하고 그 유례와 계보를 추적함으로써 영산강유역의 재지세력들은 백제를 비롯하여 신라, 가야, 왜 등 여러 세력과 다원적으로 교류 또는 교섭한 것으로 해석하였다.

Horse tacks unearthed from the Yeongsan River Basin began to receive attention after a set of horse ornaments was discovered from Josan Ancient Tomb of Wolsong-ri, Haenam, in 1982. The horse ornament set included an f-shaped bit plate and an oval and knife-edge-shaped strap pendant, which was rare at that time. Since then, several tacks were found attracting the attention of Korean and foreign researchers: hemispheric horse harness fittings for crossbelt decorated with lotus flower pattern, and horse bit from Sindeok Ancient Tomb of Yedeok-ri, Hampyeong, in 1991; Silla-style cross-patterned heart-shaped horse bit plate, and three-leaf patterned heart-shaped strap pendant from the Stone Chamber No. 96 of the Ancient Tomb No. 3 of Bogam-ri, Naju; and tacks including f-shaped bit plate, wooden stirrup, and iron stirrup, as well as the double ring-type bit plate uncommon in the Yeongsan River Basin, from the Stone Chamber No. 1 of Jeongchon Ancient Tomb in Naju.
Current study collected all the tacks unearthed from the Yeongsan River Basin, and compared them with the materials of the same time unearthed from various parts of East Asia including the Korean Peninsula and the Japanese Islands, and examined their typology, chronology, and genealogy, the characteristics of the buried persons, as well as the international relations and negotiations.
Results confirm that the tacks from Yeongsan River Basin were for horseback riding with functions of control, stabilization, and decoration. This shows that the horseback riding culture was popular in the late 5th century to the 6th century in the Yeongsang River Basin. In terms of their structure and material, they are viewed as tacks having practical, militaristic, and display purpose like those from the tombs of the Silla Kingdom and the Gaya Kingdom of the same time. In addition, the buried person is presumed to have been a local leader or an influencer with strong martial or political power. In addition, this study noted foreign elements in the style of the majority of the tacks from the Yeongsan River Basin, and tracked the origin and genealogy. It is concluded that the local powers in the Yeongsan River Basin had multidimensional interactions and negotiations with powers of Baekje, Silla, Gaya, and Wa.
