초록

本稿は江戸川乱歩の「変格探偵小説」の中、「押絵と旅する男」における「異界 」に着目し、その特徴を考察したものである。 乱歩の「押絵と旅する男」において「異界」は「都市」という日常空間に存在し ていた。かつて「異界」を覗ける手段として「股のぞき」といった民俗的しぐさ が想定されてきたが、この作品においては双眼鏡という近代の文物がその代わりになっている。双眼鏡は特別で神秘的な尖端文物だが、「魔性」をもって いる物でもあった。そのような双眼鏡と逆さにすることで秩序の反転を企む という民俗学的な発想が結び付き、人間が「異界」に移動するという怪異を産 み出している。「異界」の情景は現実世界のそれと酷似しており、人間は「異界 」に移動しても現実世界の時間に支配された。また、近代文明の象徴である汽 車は民俗的観念と結び付き、「異界」に変貌し、怪異を産み出している。 こういった近代文物にまつわる怪異は近代文物に象徴される近代に対する 乱歩の認識の反映であろうが、それはまた同時代の日本人の認識の反映であ るともいえよう。そして、この作品が好評を得ている理由は、怪異など幻想 的事件に対して近代的なやり方で接していきながらも、それと日本人の「民俗 的観念」を結び付けているからでなかろうか。乱歩の「変格探偵小説」の特徴は そのような点にあると考えられる。

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to discuss ‘Another World' in detail and look more closely at the features of ‘Another World' in <The Traveler with the Pasted Rag Picture> from Edogawa Ranpo's ‘An Anomaly Detective Story’.
‘Another World' in <The Traveler with the Pasted Rag Picture> takes place in a city where daily life exists like our own. Typically, it is not unusual to consider ‘mata-nozoki' which is a traditional method as the means to be able to see into ‘Another World', however, binoculars which are tools of modern civilization have been used for looking into ‘Another World' in <The Traveler with the Pasted Rag Picture>. The binoculars are special and mysterious high-tech tools. In addition, they are the tools which have magical powers. Futhermore, the binoculars complement the traditional way of thinking in which the order of things is reversed, so they cause the mysterious phenomenon of moving into ‘Another World'. The views from both ‘Another World' and real world are identical, and humans are still under the rule of time in the real world even when they have moved into ‘Another World'. A train as a symbol of modern civilization is also connected to folk ideas, so this changes into ‘Another World' and makes strange phenomenon.
The strange phenomenon related to modern civilization is affected by not only Ranpo's thoughts but also contemporary Japanese people's minds in that period of time. The reason why <The Traveler with the Pasted Rag Picture> is highly acclaimed may be that the author describes the strange and supernatural phenomenon in a modern way and considers the phenomenon in connection with the folk ideas which Japanese people have. It should be clear that the characteristics in ‘An Anomaly Detective Story’ by Ranpo are bound up with these points.
