조지 린드벡과 종교 간의 대화 ― 배타성과 충실성 (George Lindbeck and Interreligious Dialogue: Exclusivity and Faithfulness)

초록

본 논문의 목적은 린드벡의 종교와 종교 간의 관계에 대한 이론이 일반적인 배타주의나 독립주의와 같이 진정한 종교 간의 대화 가능성을 차단하는 이론이 아니라 체계 내적 충실성에 기반한 개방성을 통해 각 종교 전통의 정체성을 포기하지 않으면서도 실질적으로 종교 간의 대화에 참여할 가능성을 여는 이론이라는 점을 보여주는 것이다. 린드벡의종교 이론은 문화-언어적 접근에서의 진리 이론에 기반해 있다. 그는범주적(categorial) 진리와 체계 내적(intrasystematic) 진리가 존재론적인 진리와 언어적이고 실천적으로 연결되어 있다고 보았으며, 이에 기초하여 종교를 문화나 언어와 같이 신자들의 정체성을 형성하고 신자들이 실재를 해석하게 해 주는 틀(framework) 혹은 구조(structure)로 설명하였다. 린드벡은 이 관점을 텍스트 내재성(intratextuality)이라는 개념으로 설명하였는데, 이 텍스트 내재성은 체계내부적으로는 경전이제공하는 세계관에 대한 실천적 충실성으로 발현되고 외부적으로는세계를 동화하는 힘(assimilative power)이라는 형태로 드러난다. 이 동화하는 힘은 종교 일반을 관통하는 경험이나 보편적 진리를 전제하지않고 각 종교 전통의 체계 내부적인 규칙에 충실하므로 포괄주의나 다원주의에 빠지지 않으면서도 임시방편적이면서 실천적인 종교 간의 대화가 가능하게 하는 토대가 될 수 있다. 이는 동시에 문화-언어적 종교 이해가 배타적인 성격을 띠면서도 폭력적이지 않은 개방성을 가질수 있는 근거가 된다. 이러한 린드벡의 제안은 종교 간의 대화를 위한하나의 실천적 대안으로 받아들일 수 있으며, 보수적인 성향이 강한 한국교회에 현실적으로 적합한 종교 이론 혹은 종교 간의 관계에 대한 이론이 될 수 있다. 물론 이를 위해서는 린드벡의 이론이 유대교, 기독교, 이슬람교와 같은 모델에 기초하여 형성되었다는 점을 고려하여 이를보완 발전시키는 방향으로 적용하는 노력을 기울여야 한다.

영어초록

The purpose of this paper is to show that even though the understanding of religion and relations between religions in Lindbeck’s cultural-linguistic approach has been understood as an exclusivism or independence theory, it can be interpreted as openness based on intrasystematic faithfulness, that is, intratex tuality. To this end, this paper analyzes Lindbeck’s understanding of religion in terms of his theory of truth. What is revealed in this analysis is that Lindbeck’s theory of truth is not a relativistic view of truth that recognizes only categorial and intrasystematic truth, but a weak realism that connects these two truths with ontological truth linguistically as well as practically. Based on this understanding of truth, Lindbeck described religion as a framework or structure for interpreting the reality of believers in a form similar to culture or language. Lindbeck explains the view that religion is the framework for interpreting the world with the concept of intratextuality. This intratextulity is revealed internally in the system as a practical fidelity to the worldview provided by the scriptures. At the same time, since the intratextuality has the characteristic of integrating all the realities experienced by the believer, it appears as an assimilative power externally. Lindbeck believes that this assimilative power is the non-universal and non-foundational basis for interreligious dialogues. In this regard, the foundation of the relationship between religions in the cultural-linguistic approach is not located in a common expe rience of ultimate reality as in the case of inclusivism or pluralism, but within the text which creates categories appropriate for ultimate reality and within the assimilative power which is faithful to intrasystematic rules generated by the text. In this respect, Lindbeck’s theory of religion, although seemingly having an exclusive character, does not result in closedness but opens up the ad ho but practical interreligious conversations, because this exclusive character is linked to the assimilative power based on the intratextuality. Moreover, Lindbeck’s exclusivist character based on faithfulness to the Bible and openness originated from this faithfulness may contribute to developing a theory of religion or that of a relationship between religions, which is realistically suited to a conservative Korean church. In addition, considering that Lindbeck’s theory was formed based on specific religious traditions such as Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, it is necessary to make efforts to modify his theory considering the religious environments of Korea.
