예수회의 적응주의와 종교간 대화 (Jesuit Adaptationism and interreligious dialogue)

초록

본 논문은 선교초기 일본, 중국, 인도 등 동아시아의 삼국과 라틴 아메리카의 인디오들을 중심으로 전개된 예수회의 적응주의 선교에 대해살펴본 후, 예수회 적응주의의 특징들 속에 나타난 종교간 대화의 원리들을 고찰하고자 한다.
지리상의 발견과 과학의 혁명이 이루어졌던 근대 초부터 진행된 유럽 그리스도교의 세계화에 있어서 예수회의 선교정책은 중요한 역할을하였다. 예수회의 적응주의 선교는 아시아에서 동서양 문명의 상호교섭을 일구어낸 획기적인 대화 방법이었다. 특히 예수회의 중국, 인도, 일본문화의 적응은 서구사회가 아시아의 문화에 지대한 관심을 갖게 된계기가 되었고, 유럽의 사회·인문 각 분야에 방대한 영향을 끼치는 기회가 되었다.
16-17세기 예수회의 선교사들은 문화가 고도로 발달한 일본, 중국,인도에서는 힌두교, 불교, 유교문화에 적응하며 그리스도교의 토착화와종교·문화 간의 대화를 모색하였다. 반면에 라틴 아메리카는 아시아의삼국과 같이 고등한 문화가 발달되지 못했기 때문에 인디오들의 문화수준을 유럽인들의 그것과 동등하게 끌어 올리려는 작업이 우선시되었다. 따라서 라틴 아메리카의 적응주의는 아시아의 적응주의와는 다른모습으로 전개되었다. 즉 아시아에서는 토착문화를 중심으로 하는‘위로부터의 적응’이, 라틴 아메리카에서는 사회정의를 표방하는‘아래로 부터의 적응’이 선교의 출발점이 되었다. 예수회의 적응주의는 선교뿐아니라 타종교·타문화와 소통할 수 있는 대화의 원리가 되었다. 즉,‘위로부터의 대화’와‘아래로부터의 대화’,‘ 문화적 대화’와‘종교적대화’,‘ 인식적 대화’와‘사회적 대화’의 원리가 되었다.
본 논문은 근대초기 예수회의 선교방법이었던‘적응주의’를 통해그리스도교와 타종교와의 대화의 원리를 모색하고자 한다. 16-17세기예수회 선교사들이 보여주었던 아시아의 종교간 대화의 경험들을 토대로 문화간·종교간 대화의 원리들을 발견하고자 한다. 이 작업을 위해우선 예수회 적응주의 선교에 대해 역사적으로 고찰할 것이다. 특히 동아시아의 삼국－일본, 중국, 인도－을 중심으로 예수회의 선교사들이불교, 유교, 힌두교 문화에 어떻게 적응하며 대화하였는지 그 과정을 살펴볼 것이다. 이후 라틴 아메리카의 레두시온 선교에 대해 적응주의적관점에서 논구할 것이다.
첫째, 동아시아－일본, 중국, 인도－와 아메리카 대륙에서 보여준 초기 예수회의 적응주의 선교 사례를 살펴본다. 둘째, 예수회의 적응주의사례 분석을 통해 유럽의 그리스도교가 아시아와 아메리카의 토착문화및 종교와 어떻게 적응하며 조화(調和)할 수 있었는지 탐구한다. 특히예수회의 적응주의와 종교간 대화의 상관성을 방법적, 문화적, 인식적,종교적, 사회적 적응을 중심으로 살펴본다. 마지막으로 종교간 대화의원리로서 예수회의 적응주의에 대해 논구한다. 이것을 바탕으로 오늘날종교 갈등과 분쟁의 시대에 예수회의 적응주의가 어떻게 적용될 수 있는지를 모색한다.
지금까지 예수회의 적응주의에 대한 연구는 많았지만 종교간 대화의 원리로서 예수회의 적응주의를 담론화한 경우가 거의 없었기 때문에 본 연구의 의미가 크다고 할 수 있겠다.

영어초록

This study focuses on the Jesuit adaptationism that had been put into practice in the East Asian countries of Japan, China and India and also among Latin American Indians in the beginning of their missionary work, and examines the principle of interreligious dialogue shown in the characteristics of Jesuit Adaptationism.
Jesuit missionary policies played an important role in the globalization of European Christianity that had started from the early modern times when the revolution of science and geographical discoveries were being achieved. The Jesuit adaptationism was an epoch-making method of dialogue to cultivate mutual negotiations between the East and West civilizations. Especially, the Jesuit adaptation in the cultures of China, India and Japan became an opportunity for the western societies to have great interest in Asian cultures, and many areas of European societies and liberal arts were to be influenced by them.
The Jesuit missionaries in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries tried to naturalize the Christianity with a dialogue between religion and culture in Japan, China and India where the civilization was highly advanced, by adapting to the cultures of Hinduism, Buddhism and Confucianism. In the mean time, they put priorities in raising the cultural level itself of the South American Indians in Latin America as their civilization was not as advanced as that of those three countries in Asia. Therefore, the adaptationism in Latin America developed with different approaches from the adaptationism in Asia.
In other words, the starting point of Jesuit missionary work in Asia was ‘adaptation from the top’ centering on the traditional cultures whereas it was ‘adaptation from the bottom’ representing social justice in Latin America. Jesuit adaptationism has become a principle of dialogue not only for the missionary work but also for the communication with other religions and cultures. It has become a principle that includes ‘dialogue from the top’, ‘dialogue from the bottom’, ‘cultural dialogue’, ‘religious dialogue’, ‘cognitive dialogue’and‘ social dialogue’.
This thesis investigates, first of all, the precedent examples of Jesuit adaptationism in the early times of their missionary work in Latin America as well as in East Asia such as in Japan, China and India. Secondly, through the analysis of those examples of Jesuit adaptationism, it examines how the Christianity from Europe could adapt and harmonize itself with indigenous cultures and religions in Asia and America. Especially, it studies the interrelationship between Jesuit adaptationism and religious dialogue by centering on methodological, cultural, cognitive, religious and social adaptations.
Lastly, this thesis discusses Jesuit adaptationism as a principle of dialogue between religions. Based on those studies, it seeks how Jesuit adaptationism could be applied to today’s world of religious conflicts and disputes.
This study is meaningful in that Jesuit adaptationism is put into a rare case of discourse even if there have been many studies on Jesuit adaptationism to date.
