초록

‘전실자식 간을 먹으려는 계모’설화는 계모가 꾀병을 핑계로 전처아들의 간을 요구하면서 갈등을 빚는 계모설화이다. 이 유형에 속하는 총 19개 각편은 주인공이 자신을 살해하려는 계모와 부친에 맞서 백정 신분의 양부모, 명문집안의 아내, 혈연지간인 형제, 친어머니 등 다양한 인물들과 연대하며 새로운 가족관계를 구축하는 과정에서 크게 네 가지 하위유형을 형성하며 전승되고 있다.
이 설화는 계모에 의해 학대받는 전처소생 자녀의 삶을 다룬다는 점에서 <콩쥐팥쥐>, <손 없는 색시> 등과 계모설화적 보편성을 공유한다. 그러나 계모의 핍박을 딛고 성공한 주인공이 귀향과 계모 징치를 통해 훼손된 본래의 가정을 복원하는 것에는 소극적이라는 점에서 계모설화의 서사적 특질과는 거리가 있다. 그는 친가로 복귀해 가문의 후계자가 되기보다는 입양가족, 처가중심가족, 형제유대, 모계가족 등 다양한 가족관계, 새로운 가정의 형태를 실험한다. 주인공에 의한 이러한 시도들은 양반가문의 적장자라는 그의 신분을 감안할 때 부계혈연 중심의 전통적 가족제도의 근간을 흔드는 전복적인 의미를 지닌다고 할 수 있다.
결국 이 설화는 계모라는 악독한 인물을 내세워 그녀의 반사회적이고 반인륜적인 행위를 고발하는 듯하나 실상은 폐쇄적 혈연주의, 적장자 중심의 가계계승의 원칙, 수직적이고 권위적인 가부장제를 근본적으로 비판하고 있는 것이다. 이 설화가 지닌 이러한 문학사회학적 의의는 전처 딸과 계모의 갈등을 다루는 여타의 계모설화가 통과의례 구조를 통해 여성주인공의 성인식을 주제로 하는 것과 변별되는 특징이라 할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

The tale about “the stepmother trying to eat the liver of a child of the first wife” deals with conflicts between the second wife after the death of the first wife and the son of the first wife. The beginning of the event happens when the stepmother demands the son’s liver as treatment for her feigned illness.
There are total 19 versions in the type of the tale, and they differ in narrative development according to whether the first wife left the only son, brothers or seven brothers and to relationship with family members. They are categorized into the types of “passing an examination”, “marriage expansion”, “reunion” and “mother-son solidarity”. The different types share a common feature that the father is in hostile conflicts with the son while maintaining intimate relationships with the stepmother. In response to hostile father-son relationships, they formed non-blood-related(非血緣)foster father-son(養父子) relationships, the house of the wife(妻家)-centric family relationships, horizontal and friendly brother(兄弟) relationships, and maternal line(母系)-centric mother-son relationships.
The tale tells a story about a family being driven toward destruction due to the stepmother and its members in conflicts, thus showing the universal characteristics of stepmother tale. However, it raises objections to the patriarchal(家父長的) family system in that it pursues various family relationships and new family forms including foster family, the house of the wife-centric family, brotherly union, and maternal line family rather than presenting the successful son of the first wife returning to the house of his father(親家), recovering his status as the eldest son(嫡長子), and becoming the successor of the family.
In short, the tale seems to report the anti-social and anti-human acts of a wicked character called the stepmother on the surface. However, it actually criticizes closed the principle of blood ties, the principle of the eldest son-centric family succession, and vertical and authoritative patriarchy fundamentally. It is the significance of the tale in literary sociology and differentiates the tale from other stepmother tales about conflicts between the daughter of the first wife and the stepmother, in which the topic is the coming-of-age ceremony(成人式) of the heroine through the structure of passage rite(通過儀禮).
