초록

시청각(Audio Visual Pavilion)은 2013년 설립된 서울의 미술 공간이다. 본 논문은 시청각의 초기 설립 단계로부터 운영진과의 교감을 통해 디자인한 시청각의 아이덴티티와 전반적인 시각 정책, 그리고 이것이 구체적인 타이포그래피 방법론을 통해 실행된 여러 면면을 살핀다. 시청각의 시각 정책은 다음과 같은 특징으로부터 착안했다. 시청각은 미술 공간이지만 운영진은 글쓰기와 출판된 글의 유통에 대해서도 뚜렷한 특징을 갖고 있었다. 시청각의 활동은 주로 미술 전시와 출판, 간헐적인 이벤트 등으로 나뉘며 이러한 활동이 통합적이고 서로 분리하기 어려운 형태로 이뤄진다. 시청각의 주요 활동이 시청각의 성격을 정의하며 또한 그 활동은 서로를 부분적으로 정의한다.
이와 같은 시청각의 특성을 적극적으로 받아들이고 또 이 특성에 공헌하기 위해 관습적인 사무용 문서 혹은 공문서의 체계를 시청각의 시각 정책에 도입하려 했다. 먼저 시청각을 위한 심볼과 로고, 전용 글자체와 함께 기록 플랫폼으로서의 웹사이트를 제작했다. 이 웹사이트에서는 미술 전시 공간의 부가적인 활동으로 여겨지던 출판과 퍼포먼스, 렉처와 같은 이벤트를 전시 부문과 동등하게 설정하고 시청각 전용 글자체를 활용한 문서 모듈 체계로 이를 통제하기를 의도했다. 웹사이트의 화면 기반 페이지와 2차원 평면 인쇄물의 물리적 특징을 혼합한 분류 체계를 만들고 이를 기반으로 시청각에서 이루어진 모든 활동이 기록될 수 있도록 고안했다. 이 기록은 웹사이트에 전자문서의 형태로 수록되는 동시에 동일한 디자인으로 인쇄된 문서, 도서 등으로 확장되는 등 서로 연동된다.
시청각의 시각 정책은 시청각의 모든 활동에 관여하고 기록하는 플랫폼으로서 계획했기 때문에 실제로 실행되지 않으면 결과를 가시화할 수 없다. 약 4년여 기간 동안 시청각 운영진과 연구자는 긴밀한 협업을 통해 지속적으로 아이덴티티를 갱신해왔다.

영어초록

Audio Visual Pavilion is an art space built in 2013. This thesis aims to examine the identity of Audio Visual Pavilion formed through the interaction with the management team when the exhibition center was constructed and overall visual policies of the center implemented through a specific typography methodology. The policies of the center focus on the following features. The management team of Audio Visual Pavilion performs distinct functions about writing and distribution of the texts despite the identity of the center as an art space. The activities of the art space are divided into art exhibitions, publications, and intermittent events, and these activities are so integrated that it is difficult to separate them from each other. The main activities of Audio Visual Pavilion define not only the nature of the center but also each other in part.
The direction of this thesis is to embrace such characteristics of the art space and to apply the traditional system of business and official documents to its visual policies to boost the characteristics. First of all, this research created a website as a recording platform with the symbol, the logo and the dedicated fonts of the center. On this website, publishing, performances, and lectures considered additional events conducted in art exhibition spaces were given equal status with exhibitions and all of these were controlled by the document module system based on the use of dedicated fonts. Also, a classification system that combines the screen-based page of the website and the physical features of 2D flat printed materials was made and all activities performed in Audio Visual Pavilion were designed to be recorded under the system. This record takes the form of electronic documents on the website and these documents are expanded to paper documents and books with the same design, interlocking with each other.
The visual policies were designed for the purpose of engaging and recording all activities of the center, so if not executed, they are meaningless. The management team and researchers of the center have updated its identity through close cooperation for about 4 years.
