16-17세기 兩班家 노비 가족의 존재 형태- 固城李氏 臨淸閣 分財記 분석을 통하여 - (The Types of Servant Families in Noble Families in the 16th and 17th Century - An Analysis of the Imcheonggak Bunjaegi of the Goseong Lee Family -)

초록

본고는 16-17세기 양반가의 分財記에 수록된 노비와 그들의 가족에 관한 정보를 분석하여 노비의 가족구조를 해명하고자 작성한 글이다. 구체적으로는 노비가 主家에 의해 어떻게 보유·상속되며, 그 과정에서 노비의 家系가 어떻게 지속되는지를 살펴보았다.
1540년부터 1713년까지 安東 固城李氏家의 가계계승자들은 자신이 상속받은 노비를 청·장년기를 지내는 30여년간 2.5배에서 3.5배 정도 증식하였다. 그 증식의 방식으로는 상속과 매매, 자연증가 외에도 자료상에 직접적으로 나타나지 않는 다양한 방식의 유입이 있었을 것으로 추정된다.
李氏家의 노비는 가족 형태 면에서 少人數 집중 가족의 범위를 벗어나지 못하였다. 1인 가족이 17% 내외의 비율로 존재하며, 세대를 구성하지 못하는 과도적 가족까지 포함하면 30% 정도가 부모-자식으로 연결되는 가족을 구성하지 못하였다. 가족을 이룬 경우라 해도 부부와 미혼자녀로 구성된 단혼가족이 대부분이었다. 평균 작성 시차가 28.8년인 이씨가의 분재기에서 노비 가계의 지속률은 38.2%에 불과했다. 60% 이상의 노비 가족이 한 세대를 넘기지 못하고 가계가 끊기는 현상이 반복되고 있는 것이다.
이와 같이 몇 代를 거듭하여 이어지고 있는 양반가의 분재기에서 노비들의 가계가 새롭게 등재되고 다음 대에 사라지기를 반복하는 이유는 몇 가지로 추론 가능하다. 본고에서는 主家의 상속·경영·증식·분할 등의 과정에서 끊임없이 소속과 거주지를 이동하는 노비의 속성을 중심으로 그 원인을 분석하였다. 그밖에 양란 이후 증가하는 상민층의 노비로의 투탁, 그리고 그들 하층민들의 미약한 가족의식 등이 원인으로 추정된다.

영어초록

This study set out to analyze the information about the servants and their families found in the Bunjaegi(documents of property inheritance) of noble families in the 16th and 17th century and to illuminate the family structure of servants. More specifically, it examined how servants were owned and inherited by their master families and how servants and their families were maintained in the process.
The successors of the Goseong Lee family in Andong multiplied their inherited servants 2.5~3.5 times for 30 years throughout their youth and adulthood from 1540 to 1713. The means of multiplication include inheritance, trade, and natural increase. And it's estimated that there must have been many other means of servant influx not directly depicted in the documents.
The servants of the Lee family were confined to the family type focusing on a small number of members. One-member families accounted for 17% or so, and about 30% failed to form a family of the parents and children when including transitional families(or disrupted families) that couldn't form a generation. Even if they formed a family, most of the families existed in the category of monogamous marriage consisting of the parents and single children. The continuance rate of a servant family in the Bunjaegi of the Lee family, whose average documenting interval was 28.8 years, was only 38.2%, which implies that 60% or more of the servant families discontinued in their existence not surviving more than a generation.
A couple of reasons can be explored why there were the repetitions of new servant families being registered in the Bunjaegi of a noble family, which lasted for generations, and then disappearing from the documents after only one generation. The study focused on the nature of servant status, which involved constant changes to a master and residence in the process of the master family's inheritance, management, multiplication, and division. Other reasons may include servants' poor concept of family or family ethics and the inflow of independent servants due to the poor management of small farms. In future studies, they need to elaborate on them.
