장서각 소장 보물 『楞嚴經』과 『圓覺經』의 인쇄문화적 가치 (Printing-cultural Values of Śūrangama-sūtra and Sutra of Perfect Enlishtenment, Treasures Owned by Changseo-gak)

초록

이 연구는 조선 세조 때 간행된 한글본 『능엄경』과 구결본 『원각경』에 대하여 현존본을 중심으로 인쇄문화적 측면에서 다루어본 것이다. 인쇄문화적 가치를 중점적으로 살펴본 것은 장서각 소장의 보물 『능엄경』과 『원각경』이 모두 한국 인쇄문화의 진면목을 살필 수 있는 좋은 자료이며, 각 책이 한국고인쇄사에서 중요하게 다루고 있는 간경도감과 금속활자불경 중에 큰 비중을 차지하는 자료이기 때문이다. 보물로 지정된 이유 중의 하나도 이러한 인쇄문화적 가치를 높이 평가한 결과임을 알 수 있다. 서지학과 국어사자료로서 이 책의 중요성에 대해서는 간행기관인 간경도감과 이를 설치한 세조의 불경간행사실과 깊은 연관이 있다. 이 글에서는 간행이 이루어지까지의 배경과 각 경전의 인쇄문화적 의미를 기존의 연구를 토대로 점검해보았다. 더불어 현존본으로 전해지는 자료에 대하여 정리하고 판본의 계통과 그 실제 상태를 파악하였다. 『능엄경』은 세조 8년(1462)에 간경도감에서 세조의 명으로 번역하여 간행한 언해본이다. 특히 이 간경도감본은 信眉, 韓繼禧, 金守溫 등 당대의 고승과 학자를 동원하여 국역하고 교열하여 乙亥字 및 한글 활자로 인출하였던 것을 토대로 교정하여 다시 목판본으로 간행한 것으로 校讎學적으로도 유용하게 다루어져야할 자료이다. 『원각경』은 宗密이 疏鈔한 것에 세조가 한글로 구결을 단 것을 세조 11년(1465)에 乙酉字로 인출한 것이다. 을유자는 1465년인 을유년에 鄭蘭宗의 글씨를 글자본으로 주조한 것이다. 간경도감 언해본을 저본으로 경문 및 주석의 한글 구결 부분만을 편집하여 을유자판으로 인출되었으므로 구결은 간경도감본 원각경언해와 일치한다. 이 을유자판 원각경은 주로 불경을 간행할 목적으로 주조된 활자로 인출되어 전래본이 많지 않고 초인본이라 인쇄상태도 깨끗하여 귀한 판본에 속하므로 15세기 국어학 및 서지학 연구에 귀중한 자료적 가치를 지니고 있다. 활자의 쓰임이나 조판 등 인쇄기술사적으로도 의미있는 내용을 살필 수 있다.

영어초록

The author in this study investigated Śūrangama-sūtra (the Korean version) and the Sutra of Perfect Enlishtenment (kugyolbon), two sutras published in the 15th century (under King Seojo), focusing on the existing versions in the printing-cultural aspect. The reason the printing-cultural aspect was focused is that the both sutras as Treasures owned by Changseo-gak are superior materials showing true characters of Korea's printing culture and that each of them serve as important materials among Gangyeongdogam and metal printing type sutras, which are significant in the history of Korean ancient printing. Due do their printing-cultural values, the two sutras were designated by Treasures.
The importance of the sutras as the materials of bibliography and history of Korean language is closely related to Gangyeongdogam, the publishing agency, and the activity of sutra publishing of King Seojo, who established the agency. In this study, the background of the publishing and the printing-cultural significance of each sutra were identified on the basis of the existing researches. Furthermore, the author reviewed the materials as the existing versions and identified the distributions of editions and their actual conditions.
Śūrangama-sūtra is a Korean version that was translated and published by Gangyeongdogam under the order of King Seojo (in the 8th year of his reign, or 1462). This version of Gangyeongdogam, in particular, should be usefully treated in the aspect of textual bibliography because it was corrected and published with wood-block prints based on the version that was translated and reviewed to be Korean by high priests and great Confucianists such as Shin Mi, Han Kye Hee, and Kim Su On and printed with Eul-yu-ja type.
The Sutra of Perfect Enlishtenment was interpreted by Jong Mil, added of kugyols by King Seojo, and printed with Eul-yu-ja type in the 11th year of his reign, or 1465. Eul-yu-ja type was made on the basis of the handwritings of Chung Nan Jong in 1465 (Lunar year of Eul-yu). Although based on the Korean version of Gangyeongdogam, it contained only the edited parts of the korean kugyols from the sutras and notes, printed with Eul-yu-ja. Therefore its kugyols are identical with those of the Korean version of Sutra of Perfect Enlishtenment published by Gangyeongdogam. This Sutra of Perfect Enlishtenment with Eul-yu-ja is a significant material in the study of the 15th-century national language and bibliography, for it has few transmitted copies because it printed with types that were mainly made in order to publish sutras and it is one of rare versions because it was the first-printed one with clear printing.
