Novels with the motifs of returning home in the liberation period can be divided into two parts, which one is focused on several types of hardships or rapture returnees might experience on their way home, and the other, focused on several types of frustration after the return to home.
In the former case, novels present the process of recognizing the meaning of the country through several types of hardships returnees experience. Most of these returning-motif novels in this period, however, proceeded no farther than to show the returnees rejoicing over the liberation and their return to home.
Meanwhile, the liberation had implanted in returnees an anticipation for return to home. They, however, lived in a situation where they had no other ways but to roam around with consistent threats of food and house shortage. The reality of the returnees wandering is not only limited to showing the destitute social circumstances, but on the process of studying the cause, it also shows how these novels demonstrate the difficulty of developing the ego, and the sense of crisis. Therefore, novels in this period show the process of returnees being frustrated, by highlighting the situation of them living under various types of threats even though they return to home in rush feeling nostalgia. Including「Dukubie」by Hwang Sun-won,「Hyulgubujok」by Kim Dong-lee,「Counting stars」by Kye Yong-muk, and「The history of the house with the great gate」by Jeon Hong-jun have these features.
In brief, returning-motif novels in the liberation period show the desire for ego-perfection, and further, rehabilitating the identity of the nation through the process of there anticipation being frustrated during the return or afterwards.
