‘처용설화’의 현대적 변용 연구-시와 소설을 중심으로- (A Study on the Modern Transformation of ‘Cheoyongseolhwa’ - Centering on Poetry and novels.)

초록

본고는 신라 시대의 ‘처용설화’가 현대시와 소설 작품에서 어떻게 변용되었는지를 살폈다. 그동안 ‘처용설화’와 관련된 많은 연구물이 축적되었고, 시나 소설을 위시하여 춤, 공연, 드라마 등으로 재창작되고 있다. 이런 상황에서 지금까지 만들어진 작품을 대상으로 그 변용의 의미를 찾아보는 것도 의미가 있다고 판단된다. 앞으로 창작될 작품에도 일정한 방향성을 제시하는 데 도움이 될 것이다.
우선, 원전에 대한 해석과 그 의미를 천착하였다. 『삼국유사』 「처용랑 망해사」조에 담긴 내용 분석을 통해 보면 처용은 역병치료를 위해 등용되었고, 왕의 의도대로 역병치료에 힘썼던 인물이었다. 역신의 범처 행위는 처용의 아내에게 역병을 전염시키는 것을 형용한 것이고, 역신을 마주한 처용의 행위는 역병 퇴치를 위한 주술적 방법으로 평가하였다. 따라서 ‘처용설화’는 역병 퇴치와 문첩신으로 등극한 처용의 위상을 보여준 것이지 “간통과 불륜”의 이야기와는 거리가 있음을 말해준다.
현대시로 변용된 작품을 ‘원 텍스트의 차용’, ‘원전의 비판적 수용’, ‘원전의 해체’로 나누어 살펴보았다. 현대소설로 변용된 작품은 ‘미완의 처용’, ‘현실에 영합하여 변질된 처용’, ‘체념하는 처용’에 해당하는 작품을 대상으로 그 의미를 천착하였다. 소설의 경우, 80년대부터 90년대에 걸친 현 상황에서 “불륜과 용서”라는 주제 아래 재창작되고 있음을 볼 수 있다.
처용의 이야기가 다양한 장르로 재창작되고 있다는 점은 고전의 현대화라는 관점에서는 고무적인 일이다. 그러나 그 주제가 시류에 편승하여 한가지 형태만으로 고착하는 것은 원전에 대한 잘못된 편견을 유발하고 고착시키는 위험성을 내포한다. 이는 창작자가 원전의 내용을 온전하게 이해해야 하는 이유이기도 하다.

영어초록

This paper examines how the ‘Cheoyongseolhwa’ of the Silla Dynasty has been transformed in modern poetry and novels. In the meantime, a considerable amount of research has accumulated on the ‘Cheoyongseolhwa’ and it has been adapted into various art forms, such as dance, performances, and dramas, in addition to poetry and novels. In the era of new media, with the public’s exposure, modern digital culture is giving rise to new applications. Given this situation, it holds significant importance to uncover the meaning behind the transformations in the works produced thus far. This significance arises from its potential to guide the direction of future creative works.
First of all, the paper delved into the interpretation of ‘Cheoyongseolhwa’ and its underlying significance. By analyzing the contents of the article titled 「Cheoyongrang Manghaesa」 from 『Samguk Yusa』 it was uncovered that Cheoyong was appointed to combat the plague and diligently carried out his duties to address the plague in accordance with the king’s intentions. The episode involving the plague God’s violation of Cheoyong’s wife symbolizes the transference of the plague itself. Cheoyong’s subsequent actions, upon witnessing the plague-carrying deity, can be interpreted as a strategy to overcome the plague. Therefore, ‘Cheoyongseolhwa’ illustrates Cheoyong’s triumphant victory over the plague, leading to his promotion to the status of Menshen—rather than merely portraying a narrative of “adultery and infidelity”.
The modern poetic renditions of this tale can be categorized into three distinct approaches: ‘utilization of the original text’, ‘critical interpretation of the original text’, and ‘reinterpretation of the original text’. Likewise, the modern novel adaptations were scrutinized, revealing themes corresponding to ‘unresolved Cheoyong’, ‘compromising with reality’, and ‘resigned Cheoyong.’ These creative works predominantly revolved around the theme of “adultery and forgiveness” mirroring the prevailing societal context from the 1980s to the 1990s.
The multifaceted reimagining of Cheoyong’s narrative across various genres is heartening when considered in the context of the modernization of classical stories. It came to light that the creators must possess a comprehensive understanding of the original work to ensure successful adaptations.
