1세기 초까지 검투사 경기장에서의 좌석 배정 : 포룸의 형태와 극장법을 중심으로 (The seating arrangements in roman spectacula until the beginning of the first century : Focused on a form of the Forum and Lex Theatralis)

초록

고대 로마인들이 즐기는 3대 구경거리는 연극, 전차 경주, 검투사 경기였다. 공화정기 구경거리가 열리는 장소를 지칭하는 단어는 ‘스펙타쿨룸’이었고, 기원전 1세기 경에 원형경기장이라는 단어가 사용되었다. 로마시 최초의 검투사 경기는 우시장으로 사용했던 포룸 보아리움에서, 그다음에는 정치, 문화, 종교의 중심지인 포룸 로마눔에서 개최되었다.
공화정기 원로원 의원들은 기원전 194년부터 앞 열에 앉았고, 기사들이 원로원 의원들이 앉아 있는 좌석 다음부터 14번째 열까지의 좌석에 앉는 것은 기원전 67년의 로스키우스 극장법으로 부활되었다. 기원전 44/43년에 제정된 남부 스페인의 우르소법에 따라 로마의 원로원 의원들, 정무관, 기사, 사제, 복점관, 시의원, 시의원이 허용한 사람 등은 아레나 바로 앞에 앉았다. 제정기 들어 율리우스 극장법에 따라 원로원 의원과 기사들, 베스타의 여사제들, 황실 여성들은 여전히 앞 열에 앉았고, 일반 여성들은 남성과 따로 뒤쪽에 앉았다.
신분을 기준으로 특권을 확대하는 방향으로 정책이 이루어졌지만 포룸 로마눔의 협소한 장소 문제가 해결되지 않아 특별석은 지켜지기 어려웠다. 스타틸리우스 경기장이 캄푸스 마르티우스에 지어져 포룸 로마눔보다는 공간이 컸으나 경기의 규모가 공화정기보다 더 크고 화려해져 구경꾼이 많았다. 공간이 커진 것보다 경기의 규모와 관중의 수가 더 커졌으므로 공간 부족 문제는 여전히 남아 있었다. 따라서 로마는 특별석을 확대한 것과 달리 협소한 공간이라는 현실적인 문제에 부딪혀 좌석 배정 규칙을 제대로 이행할 수 없었다. 이것이 좌석 배정 규칙을 계속 강조하고, 준수할 것을 반복적으로 강요하는 이유이다.

영어초록

Rome was to a great extent a highly political and socially divided society, in which each citizen belonged to a separate group or ordo. This is best reflected in the Roman amphitheatre by an extensive set of regulations. Gladiatorial combat which appeared first at Rome in the context of private funeral rites, had by the time of Augustus become a favourite spectator sport of the Romans. The first recorded combat at Rome was held in the Forum Boarium, an open space on the right bank of the Tiber with a temple to Hercules. The Forum Romanum was used regularly for gladiatorial games. None of these sites was designed to accommodate these activities. Yet even after the erection of Rome’s first stone amphitheatre in 29 B.C., gladiatorial games continued to be held in these improvised arenas, as well as in the Saepta Julia after the death of Augustus.
Whenever public shows were held, the first row of seats would be left vacant for senators. In 194 B.C, long before a permanent stone amphitheatre had been erected in Rome, senators were granted the right to sit separately from the rest of the audience in the orchestra. In 67 B.C. the equites were assigned the first fourteen rows in the theatre by the Lex Roscia Theatralis. Our main source for pre Augustan seating arrangements in the Western Empire is the Lex Coloniae Genetivae from Urso, Spain. The foundation fo this colony has been dated to 44/43 B.C. This Lex Ursonensis provided for reserved seats at all spectacles in the colony for local decurions, locan pontiffs and augurs.
When Augustus had passed the Lex Iulia Theatralis, it is very likely that the Lex Iulia not only tightened up the seating arrangements for the theatre but also extended to the amphitheatre. According to the Lex Iulia, the prestigious front rows were all reserved for members of the Senate. Behind the section of senators came the fourteen rows of equites. The first two rows were reserved for the tribuni militum and ex tributum. Above these rows came the section for the ordinary Roman citizens, the plebs, who were situated in the media cavea. The final and uppermost section, the so called upper gallery, was reserved for women and children except the Vestal Virgins whom he allowed to sit in one of the tribunalia. Augustus intended to reinforce the strict Roman social hierarchy to all audience members by the Lex Iulia.
