이미지의 본질에 대한 새로운 고찰 — 유식철학의 ‘현량’과 이미지 개념의 성찰 (The Essence of Image and ‘Pratyakṣa(現量)’)

초록

시의 본질적 요소로서의 이미지는 개념과 양립할 수 없는 것으로 파악되지만, 그 이유에 대해서는 논리적으로 다루어진 적이 거의 없다. 본고는이런 문제의식에 따라 이미지와 개념의 양립불가능성에서부터 시작하여이미지의 본질을 동서양의 인식론의 관점에서 새롭게 해명하고자 한다.
먼저 인식론적 관점에서 바라 본 이미지의 특성은 지각과 관련되어 있는데, 지각은 인식 과정 중 감각과 개념적 인식의 중간에 놓여 있는 개념으로서, 서구 철학에서 지각은 순수한 감각도 아니며 지성적 개념도 아닌모호한 성격을 지니고 있다. 이것은 지각이 사물 혹은 외계와 직접적으로 연계되는 객관적인 면과 그것의 의식 내적 자각이라는 주관적인 면을 동시에 지니고 있음을 뜻한다. 이런 이중성이 지각으로부터 비롯되는 이미지의 본질을 규정하는데, 그 본질은 크게 두 가지, 즉 반질료성(半質料性,semi–matterness)과 유동성(동요 혹은 진동)으로 정리될 수 있다.
이런 이미지의 본질을 잘 규명해주는 개념이 유식철학의 ‘현량(現量)’이라는 개념이다. 유식철학에서 현량은 비량(比量)과 함께 두 가지 중요한 인식 방법이다. 전자는 개념적 사유 없이 대상의 본질을 파악하는 인식 방법,후자는 논리적, 개념적 분별을 통하여 대상을 파악하는 인식 방법을 가리킨다. 현량은 개념적 사유의 오류를 경계하는 불교적 전통에서 대상의 본질을 있는 그대로 파악하는 바른 인식 방법으로 높이 평가되어 왔다. 이것이 이미지에 적용될 때 이미지의 반질료성이 제대로 해명될 수 있다.

영어초록

Why has image been referred to as the other of concept in poem? This paper examines the epistemological concepts of the East and the West to newly explain the essence of image and investigate the ontological status and essence of the image through it.
In the first place, it is necessary to understand the epistemological process for the appropriate knowledge of the features of image and then examine the ontological status of perception which is related to the image. As a result, the perception as a concept underlying in the middle between a sense and a conceptual recognition in epistemological process has been confirmed to be an ambiguous one which is neither pure sense nor intellectual concept.
This ambiguous characteristics means that the perception has a mutually conflicting duality i,e the objective aspects directly linked to outside world and the subjective aspects of consciousness inner self–awareness. Therefore It ensures the devaluation of perception in western philosophy emphasizing the conceptual recognition.
The duality of perception defines the essence of the image coming from the perception. This paper classified the essence of image into two; one is semi–matterness and the other is fluidity i.e fluctuation or oscillation. The one points to the nature of semi–matterness which is ready to go into epistemological process to some extent while maintaining to the utmost the nature of a sense matterness. The latter points to the tense phase of the image which maintains the incessant fluid state to get out of the conceptual categorization while not failing to catch out the vivid state of sense matterness.
The concept 'pratyakṣa(現量)' from the Yogācāra philosophy makes it clear what the essence of the image is. ‘Pratyakṣa’ is one of the two major ways of recognition in contrast with ‘anumāna(比量)’ in the Yogācāra philosophy. ‘Pratyakṣa’ points to the way of recognition grasping the essence of object without the conceptual thinking, whereas ‘anumāna’ points to the way of recognition grasping the meaning of object through the conceptual discernment. According to buddhist tradition being afraid of the misleading of conceptual thinking, ‘pratyakṣa’ was highly appraised as the right way of recognition that can grasp the essence of object in itself.
