『敬信錄諺釋』의 독자 중심적 언해 특징 분석 (Analysis of Reader-Oriented eonhae Characteristics in Gyeongsinrokeonseok)

초록

본 연구는 경신록언석(1880)에 나타난 독자 중심적 언해 특징을 분석하는 데 있다. 경신록언석은 선행과 악행에 관한 내용이 수록된 중국의 경신록을 언해한 한글 전용의 언해문이다. 언해 목적이 도교 사상을 바탕으로 한 ‘권선징악’을 알리는 인류보편적인 것이라는 것과, 내용 전체가 한글 전용이라는 특징은 경신록언석이 폭넓은 독자층을 확보할 수 있는 효용성을 판단할 수 있는 1차적 근거가 될 수 있다. 경신록언석에 수록된 15장은 모두 예화 중심으로 되어 있어 그 내용이 비교적 쉽고 흥미롭다. 독자들은 흥미롭게 내용을 접하는 가운데 교훈을 얻을 수 있다. 경신록언석에는 원문의 어휘를 그대로 한글로 옮겨 쓰는 연용 언해가 많다. 경신록언석의 연용 언해는 난해한 한자어들이 아니라 대부분 일반적으로 쉽게 소통되는 한자어이기 때문에 독자층에서 내용을 이해하는 데 큰 어려움이 없다. 오히려 연용 언해가 독자층에게 더욱 간결하고 명확하게 전달되는 이점이 있을 수 있다. 연용 언해를 통해 경신록언석의 언해자는 원문 경신록을 최대한 살려 전달하고자 하였음을 알 수 있다.
경신록언석에는 언해의 문맥 이해를 위해 설명이나 부가적 정보가 필요한 부분에 대해서 두 줄로 쓴 작은 글자의 협주가 있다. 이것은 독자층에서 내용을 쉽게 이해할 수 있는 중요한 정보가 된다. 협주의 형식도 대부분 ‘～것’, ‘～이름’, ‘～말’ 등과 같은 명사로 간결하게 되어 있다. 이러한 협주는 경신록언석의 언해가 독자 중심적임을 뚜렷하게 보여 주는 것이다. 더불어 경신록언석에서 협주가 있는 한자어 중 현대국어 사전에 등재되지 않은 것이 상당수 있다. 이는 어휘 정보를 확보할 수 있는 자료로서 연구 가치가 높다.
본 논문에서는 경신록언석에 대해 국어학적 분석이나 직역과 의역의 판단보다는 언해자가 독자층의 수용 여부를 중심으로 언해한 특징적 양상들을 분석해 보고자 하였다. 이것은 번역학적인 관점에서 조선조 언해물들을 해석하고 언해문과 독자층의 거리를 기준으로 그 효용적 가치도 되새길 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

This study purports to analyze reader-oriented eonhae characteristics inGyeongsinrokeonseok(1880).
Gyeongsinrokeonseok is eonhae with the exclusive use of Hangeul whichtranslated the Chinese Gyeongsinrok(collection of theories of Taoism and itsretribution) with details about misdeeds and good deeds. The characteristicsthat the purpose of the eonhae is ‘good overcoming evil’, one of universalvalues and the entire contents are written in Hangeul only, are the primaryreason to consider that Gyeongsinrokeonseok is effective enough to attract amuch wider readership. Particularly, Chapter 15 of Gyeongsinrokeonseok arecentered around example-based stories, so its contents are relatively easyand interesting. Therefore, readers can learn lessons naturally by reading thecontents interestingly. There are many cases of the Leaving traces of sourcetext in Gyeongsinrokeonseok which just transcribes from vocabularies of theoriginal to Hangeul. It is a slightly literal eonhae which can make readershard to understand the contents. However, there are not that great difficultiesin understanding the contents because the Leaving traces of source text inGyeongsinrokeonseok is not abstruse Chinese characters but generallyeasily-communicated characters. That manner can even help deliver thecontents more simply and clearly to readers. It is revealed that, accordingto the Leaving traces of source text, the translator tried to translateGyeongsinrokeonseok by being faithful to the original.
In Gyeongsinrokeonseok, there are paraphrastic scripts in small letterswritten in two lines for parts requiring more explanation or extra informationto help understand the context of the eonhae, which is significant information to deliver the contents to readers more easily. In addition, paraphrastic scriptsmostly consist of simple noun types such as ‘～thing’, ‘～name’ and ‘～word’.
These kinds of paraphrastic scripts distinctly explain that the eonhae ofGyeongsinrokeonseok is fully reader-oriented. Moreover, the paraphrasticscripts of Gyeongsinrokeonseok are, as materials to secure much wordinformation not registered in a modern Korean language dictionary, high inresearch value.
This study investigates characteristics translated based on whetherreadership would accept or not rather than Korean linguistic analysis, orjudgment of literal and liberal eonhaes about Gyeongsinrokeonseok. It will helppoint out the history of eonhae studies of target materials in the JoseonDynasty from a perspective of eonhae studies, and review its useful valuebased on the distance between the eonhae and leadership.
