기독교대안학교의 잠재적 교육과정에 대한 질적 연구 (A Qualitative Study on Hidden Curriculum of Christian Alternative School)

초록

본 연구에서는 한 기독교대안학교의 잠재적 교육과정이 표면화되는 과정을 참여관찰과 심층면담이라는 질적 연구방식을 활용하여 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 통해 하나국제학교(가칭)의 잠재적 교육과정이 표면화되는 과정이 잠재적 교육과정의 하부구조를 바탕으로 하여 공동체 문화가 형성되고, 학교 구성원들에 의한 자율적 운영과 학교의 비공식적 개입이 이루어지는 일련의 단계를 거쳐 이루어졌다는 것을 알 수 있었다.
즉, 물리적 환경, 사회 및 심리적 정황이 가장 먼저 잠재적 교육과정의 하부구조를 형성하였으며, 이를 바탕으로 하여 학교의 전반적인 공동체 문화가 자리 잡게 되었음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이렇게 형성된 문화는 학교의 구성원들이 잠재적 교육과정을 자율적, 자발적으로 운영하여 결국 표면화하도록 하는 직접적인 요인이 되었으며, 학교는 이처럼 잠재적 교육과정의 자율적 운영이 이루어지는 단계에서 비공식적으로 개입하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.

영어초록

This study aims to observe the Hana International School(HIS), a christian alternative school, to see how the hidden curriculum of this school comes to be brought to the surface, using participant observation and ethnographic interviews as qualitative methods. From the research, this study found that the process of bringing the hidden curriculum of HIS to the surface contributed to forming the community culture based on the substructure of the curriculum. In addition, this process was developed throughout the autonomous management by the HIS community members and several stages where the HIS authorities intervened unofficially.
In terms of the substructure of the hidden curriculum, this study found several aspects that established it: isolation from external environments, dormitory system accommodating a select few, limited resources in terms of space and finance, superficial curriculum and non-authoritative organization to satisfy the requirements of the school system, and social or psychological context based on various personal relationships among the President couple and HIS graduates. In addition, this study confirmed that this substructure meaningfully influenced on the establishment of the general community culture at HIS, including the wholesome culture of conversation and entertainment rooted in God's words, cooperative and symbiotic culture rather than competitive and communal praying and efforts to follow God. This community culture of HIS directly encouraged the autonomous and voluntary management which led to students' prayer meetings, parent's prayer meetings, and senior students' participation as teaching assistants. In this process, HIS unofficially intervened to assist the autonomous management by community members.
This study noticed a few remarkable points in the process. First, as observed in case of teachers' community, a substructure and community culture could be perished or collapsed before it was apparently visualized when the culture could not be maintained homogeneously in the long term. Second, the case of students' prayer meetings showed an example that the school authorities' excessive intervention in the hidden curriculum which began to be managed autonomously could have an adverse effect. Third, some physical environments such as poor facilities and limited finance, which seemed to cause negative effects at a glance, rather brought positive results to empower students and parents, and promote the necessity of prayer. This feature implies that a negative substructure does not always cause a negative effect. In this sense, it should be reminded that the Holy Spirit which 'makes all the things cooperate to accomplish virtue' acts on the Christian education as a part of the hidden curriculum.
Based on these findings, the researcher suggests two points for further studies on christian alternative schools.
First, it is necessary to redefine the role of founders of christian alternative schools. The prior studies on christian alternative schools have tended to focus on the teachers' role rather than the founders'. As this study reveals that the president couple's leadership is a very important element to embody the hidden curriculum of HIS, the future studies expect to further focus on the founders' roles and influences on their school management.
Second, as this study observed the process of bringing the hidden curriculum to the surface based on a single case of HIS, future studies are expected to examine more cases of christian alternative schools, and analyze various causes and effects influenced by different environments.
