When Korean art therapists work with adolescents, they usually meet with clients’ parents for aboutone fifth of one session hour, which is called “parents counseling”. To understand the dynamics
between the adolescents with depression and her or his parent is important because it helps art
therapist set therapeutic approaches and explore diverse experiences. Max van Manen’s hermeneutic
phenomenological qualitative methods was applied to this study in order to understand what art
therapists experience during the meeting with their parents and what is the essence and the meaning
of experiences. Participants have master degrees in art therapy and have been practiced art therapy for
three or four years. Participants were interviewed and contents of the in-depth interview were
analyzed. Nine essential topics and 25 sub topics were reasoned and the conclusions as follows: 1)
Art therapists who work with depressed adolescents need to understand the value of the relationship
between patient and parent and the dynamic of it so that they can improve the treatment. 2) Art
therapists put their efforts to provide “parents counseling” and they utilize professional knowledge that
they learn from the program and they also feel needs for further training. 3) Art therapists who
involve with “parents counseling” assist parents to understand their children through patients’ artworks
and help parents know the effect of art therapy.
This study will provide art therapists with practical information to enhance understanding on both
adolescents with depression and their parents. Also, it suggests that when art therapists meet
depressed adolescents, they need to be aware of the imperativeness of “parents counselling” because it
affects the session and they should be prepared for that.
