초록

레슬리 뉴비긴은 20세기 후반 복음의 진정성을 위협하는 모더니즘 과 진리를 상대화시키는 포스트모더니즘의 끊임없는 도전 가운데 선교 의 성서적, 신학적 근거를 구축한 위대한 선교사이고 학자였으며 교회 연합 운동가였다. 그는 자신의 생애 동안 서구교회와 문화를 휩쓴 후기 계몽주의 문화 가운데 교회의 본질과 과제에 대한 상호 비판적인 분석을 끊임없이 찾으려고 노력했던 학자이다. 필자는 이런 정신에 입각하여 그의 에큐메니칼 교회론을 탐구했다. 그의 에큐메니칼 교회론 은 인도의 칸치푸람(Kanchipuram)에서 선교사로 일하면서 신학적인 문제에 봉착한 인도교회의 문제를 해결하고자 하는 도전으로부터 시작 되었다. 그리고 IMC 총무와 WCC 서기로 6년에 걸쳐 에큐메니칼 운동의 지도자로 섬기는 동안 보다 발전되었다. 그러나 그의 에큐메니 칼 교회론은 두 가지 교회론적 배경 하에서 형성되었는데, 1940년대 초반 교회는 단지 성경이 증명하고 있는 진리에 대해 응답하는 개인적인 믿음을 가진 자들의 모임이라는 그의 생각이 1950년대 서구 기독교 전통의 몰락과 함께 찾아 온 교회의 위기를 직시하고 교회회복의 가장 중요한 요소는 에큐메니칼 대화들에 있음을 깨닫게 되면서 바뀌게 된다. 그의 이런 변화들은 마침내 다양한 에큐메니칼 모임들을 참석하 게 하는 동기부여가 되었으며 에큐메니칼 학자로 거듭나는 중요한 초석이 된다. 그의 에큐메니칼 교회론의 방향은 교회의 선교적 소명으 로서 교회일치와 연합에 있었는데, 에큐메니칼 교회론을 정리해 보면 다음과 같다 첫째, 뉴비긴은 교회일치와 선교의 중요성을 강조한다. 20세기 현대선교운동의 주요 주제가 되어왔던 세계선교와 교회일치 분야에 주도적인 역할을 감당하면서 세계선교는 교회일치로부터 시작됨을 직시하고 교회는 일치와 연합을 통해 그리스도를 알지 못하는 사람들에 게 그리스도를 증거해야 하고, 복음을 말과 행위로 증거하기 위해 교회의 에큐메니칼 연합이 무엇보다 중요함을 시사한다. 둘째, 교회가 세계선교에 헌신하며 진정한 에큐메니칼 정신을 실천하기 위해 교회 간의 교파주의를 지양하고 그리스도 안에서 보편주 의로 나아가야 함을 뉴비긴은 주장한다. 교회는 다양한 교파를 가지고 있지만 결코 배척이나 대립관계가 아니라 보편적 입장에서 다양한 은사를 인정하고 은사들을 통해 하나님께서 보내신 선교적 소명을 감당해야 할 책임이 있음을 제시한다. 셋째, 뉴비긴은 세계선교와 교회일치의 구심점은 예수 그리스도의 십자가에 있음을 제시한다. 그는 세계역사에 연합된 교회의 중요성을 강조하고 일치와 선교에 대한 교회의 부르심은 예수 그리스도의 십자가 에 있다고 보았다. 뉴비긴은 인간의 죄는 이웃을 기만하는 자기사랑, 시기, 미움에 의해 야기된 불일치에 있음을 지적하면서 모든 불일치를 해소하고 하나 될 수 있는 중심은 예수의 십자가에 있음을 강조한다. 마지막으로 뉴비긴은 세계 일치를 강조하면서 에큐메니칼 운동의 진정한 의미는 교회일치의 차원을 넘어 세계역사 가운데로 나아가야 함을 제시한다. 교회는 지엽적인 태도를 버리고 일치와 연합을 모색해 야 하고 가시적 공동체 간의 일치를 통해 복음증거의 참된 증인으로 살아야 함을 제시한다. 나아가 하나님은 교회 안에만 계시는 분이 아니라 세계역사 가운데 계시는 분으로 이 세계역사 속에서 구속의 역사를 펼치시는 분임을 깨닫고 교회는 선교적 소명으로서 일치와 연합을 위한 에큐메니칼 교회로 나아가야함을 강조한다.

영어초록

Lesslie Newbigin was the great missionary, scholar, and activist for church unity in the late 20th century. He established missions’ biblical and theological evidence despite continual challenges from the Modernism, which threatened authenticity of the Gospel, and Postmodernism, which posed skeptical doubt on the Truth of the Gospel. During his life, he assiduously and persistently attempted to find the critical analysis of the essence and commission of the church from the culture of Post-Enlightenment, which swept Western Churches and Western cultures. With the basis of this spirit, the author analyzed Newbigin’s Ecumenical Ecclesiology. Newbigin’s Ecumenical Ecclesiology first originated as he tried to solve theological problems of churches in India during his years as missionaries in Kanchipuram, India. Then, his roles as the director of IMC and the secretary of WCC, and 6 years of experience as the leader of Ecumenical Movement helped him to bring further improvement on his Ecclesiology. Although his Ecumenical Ecclesiology was originally formed by two different Ecclesiology, it eventually changed as he changed his thought. At first, He believed that early churches in 1940s were the gatherings of believers who merely respond to the Truth in the Bible and have personal faiths. However, his thought began to change when he witnessed the fall of tradition of Western Churches and faced further crisis of churches. Then, he realized that the most significant factor of the Church’s recovery was ecumenical conversations. Such changes finally motivated him to attend various ecumenical gatherings and laid a strong foundation for him to become the ecumenical scholar. The focus of Newbigin’s Ecumenical Ecclesiology was Church’s accord and unity in the Church’s missional callings. Here are summaries of his Ecumenical Ecclesiology: First, Newbigin emphasized Church’s accord and the significance of Mission. Playing the leading role in the world’s mission and accordance, which is the main theme of 20th century’s modern mission movement, the Church should realize that world mission starts from the accordance of the Church. Also, the Church should preach Gospel to those who do not know Christ through the accord and unity of the Church. Lastly, in order to preach the Gospel through both words and actions, the Church’s ecumenical unity is especially important. Second, Newbigin asserts that in order for Church to devote herself in Mission and practice the Ecumenical spirit, the Church should eradicate denominationalism and form universalism in Christ. He suggests that the Church may have various denominations, but insists that such denominations must not cause any rejections or confrontations. Instead, denominations should universally work together to accept various gifts and to use those gifts to pursue their callings in Mission. Third, Newbigin contends that the center of World Mission and Church’s accordance is the Cross of Jesus Christ. He emphasizes the importance of united Church throughout the history of this world and insists that accordance and Church’s missional callings are from Jesus Christ. Furthermore, He points out that selfish love for oneself, jealousy, and hatred eventually lead to sins and causes discordance. Then, he adds that the one and only solution for all these discordance is Jesus Christ. Lastly, as he emphasizes the accordance in the World, Newbigin proposes that the true meaning of Ecumenical Movement is to explore ways toward Church’s accordance and unity and to live as the true witnesses of the Gospel for the accordance of the community. Furthermore, God does not simply exist inside the Church, but He is at the center of history of this world. Therefore, the Church should understand that God works throughout the history. Moreover, the Church must work its ways toward accordance and unity in Church’s missional callings and become ecumenical church.
