초록

이 글은 <바닷물이 짠 이유>(AT 565)의 유형적 특징, 분포, 역사, 우리의 고유성, 상징
들, 유입된 경로와 변이 등의 제반 문제를 고찰하였다. 그를 위해서 유럽 및 중국의 설화를
돌아보며 우리 설화와 밀접한 관련성을 보이는 일본 설화의 구성 및 구성요소와 비교하는
방법론을 이용하였다.
범세계적 분포를 보이는 이 설화의 유형적 특징은 ‘맛난 죽(KHM 103)’, ‘맷돌을 훔친 사
람이 주인을 불러 멈추다’, ‘선장이 훔친 맷돌을 바다 위에서 소금을 내다가 멈추는 방법을
몰라 배가 가라앉고 바다 속에서 계속 소금을 내서 바닷물이 짜다’라는 세 방향의 전개가
지적되고 있다. 그 역사는 중국의 물 여신 신화 <수모낭낭> 및 북구의 신화 <그로티 노래>
에 거슬러 올라가고 전자의 문헌기록은 명대(明代)의 패사휘편 , 후자는 고 에다 산문
에다 에 전한다. 우리 설화는 대체로 세 번째의 전개양상을 보인다. 구성은 맷돌획득과 상
실(적대자1), 맷돌탈환과 상실(적대자2), 그리고 바닷물이 짠 이유로 이루어지며, 이 모티프
를 모두 갖춘 C형, 맷돌획득과 탈환과 상실(적대자2)이 누락된 A형, 맷돌탈환과 상실(적대
자2)만이 누락된 B형과 D형, 바닷물이 짠 이유가 누락된 E형으로 구전되어 왔다. B형은 증
여자가 특히 선한 자질의 주인공에게 맷돌을 증여하는 특징을 보이고, D형은 조력자와 증여자 모두 나타나는데 증여자가 ‘꼬마사람’이라는 특이함을 보인다. A형이 가장 단순한 구
성이면서 더 많이 채집되었고 C형은 그 다음이다. 일본 설화는 B형에 대응하는 b형이 다
수이고 D형에 대응하는 c형이 그 다음이다. 우리의 C형은 유럽형에 더 가깝고 D형은 일본
형과 흡사하다. 이 두 형은 일제강점기에 유럽형의 일본어번역서를 통해 각기 유입되어 자
국화한 것으로 추정된다. A형은 구성의 단순함과 요소의 특이함, 평북 및 함남의 채집 등을
고려하여 자국 내 변이와 아울러 중국대륙 등 다른 경로를 추정해 볼 여지도 남는다. B형
과 E형은 자국 내에서 변이한 것이다.
이 설화에서 핵심적 기능을 하는 마법 맷돌은 선한 자질을 가진 자에게는 부의 기적을
발휘하고 시기와 탐욕과 한탕의 횡재를 바라는 자에게는 바다 속으로 침몰시켜 경계한다.
그러나 그 자신은 바다 속에서 돌기를 멈추지 않고 끊임없이 귀중한 소금을 생산하여 우리
의 생명을 유지시키고 생활을 풍요롭게 한다. 그로 인해 악을 물리치고 윤택한 삶을 영위하
도록 생산과 풍요의 상징으로 지금껏 전해내려 오고 있다.

영어초록

This study explores a wide range of issues including typical attributes,
distribution, history, uniqueness of Korean folktales, symbols, influx routes and
transformation of Why the Sea is Salty(AT 565). For this purpose, this study
investigated folktales of the world and neighboring countries and compared
the composition and composing factors of Korean folktales with those of
Japanese folktales which show similarities with Korean ones.
The typical attribute of this folktale, which shows worldwide distribution,
is development of the story in 3 different directions, which is 'delicious
porridge(KHM 103)', 'the man who stole the mill called the master to stop'
and 'a captain produced salt on the ship, had his ship sunk because he did
not know how to stop the mill and the mill keeps producing salt, which is
the reason why the sea is salty.' Its origin dates back to Chinese myth Water
Goddess Shuimu Niangniang(水母娘娘) and northern European myth
Grottas?ngr or the Song of Gr?tti and bibliographical record for the former
can be found in Baishi Huibian(稗史彙編) of Ming Dynasty(明代) while the that
for the latter are shown in Elder Edda and Snorra Edda.
The Korean folktales show 3rd type of development. They are composed of acquisition and loss of the mill(opponent 1), reclamation and loss of the
mill(opponent 2) and the reason why the sea is salty and have been passed
down in oral tradition in C type with all the motifs, A type with the omission
of acquisition, reclamation and loss(opponent 2) of the mill, B and D type
with the omission of only reclamation and loss of the mill and E type with
the omission of the reason why the sea is salty. B type exhibits the attribute
that the giver donates the mill to the proponent with good character and D
type has both helper and giver and has the peculiarity that the giver is adwarf.
Type A is the simplest in composition and has been collected most
frequently followed by type C. Type b corresponding to type B is the majority
in Japanese folktales followed by type c corresponding to type C. Korean type
C is closer to European types, whereas type D is similar to Japanese ones.
These two types are presumed to have flowed in during the Japanese Colonial
Period through European-style Japanese translation and became Koreanized.
Type A has the room to assume other routes of delivery, probably through
mainland China, considering the simplicity of composition, uniqueness of
factors and existence in Pyeognbuk and Hamnam areas. Type B and E have
undergone transformation within the bounds of Korean peninsula.
The magic mill playing pivotal role in this tale works wonders of wealth
for the good and warns the jealous, the greedy and those who pursue a quick
fortune by sinking them under the deep sea. Still the mill itself maintains and
enriches our life by continuing to work to produce precious salt. It has passed
down through generations as a symbol of production and abundance so that
we can beat the evil and lead affluent lives.
