    나. 지원 동기의 작성요령

    석박사 과정의 문 역시 좁아 대부분의 지원자들이 본인이 가고 싶어 하는 학과는 가지 못하고 또는 전공과 전혀 상관없는 학과로 지원을 하여 후세를 길러내는 대학교수들은 이 부분을 매우 조심스럽게 점검하고 있다.
    그래서 지원자들은 학위 과정의 여러 목적으로 해당 학과가 요구하는 자기소개서에 지원동기를 작성해야 하는데 자신이 원했던 학문이었으면 좀 더 깊이 있는 학문적 사고를, 아니었으면 지원동기라든가 합격 후 포부 등의 항목을 기재하는데 매우 어렵게 생각하고 있고 이로 인해 면접에서도 난감한 경험을 많이 가지고 있다.
    지원동기는 해당하는 학과에 지원자가 어떤 이유로 지원을 했는지에 대한 답변을 점검하는 것이다. 합격을 위해서라면 설사 자신이 원하지 않았던 학과 과정이라도 학습목표, 과정에 대한 이해, 학문에 대한 자신의 학습 욕망 등 열의나 이미지를 자신의 가치관이나 전공과 결부시켜 지원동기를 서술해나가는 것이 평가자의 마음을 움직일 수 있다.지원자가 자신의 전공이 아닌 경우 지원동기는 더욱 세심하게 자신의 성장 과정이나 교∙내외활동 혹은 기타 자신의 취미나 성향에서 지원동기를 발견하여 지원 학과에 매칭시키는 노력이 필요하다. 예를들면 자신의 학습에 대한 열정이 향후 연구 과정이나 사회 혹은 기업에서의 기여방법을 기술하면서 해당 학과의 학문적 필요성, 전공 수련에 필요한 지식과 학업이나 학습 혹은 연구활동에 필요한 일과 합리적으로 맞추어 동참하고 싶다는 생각을 나타내야 한다.
