The nature of the body is life, and the non-action mind that conforms to it is thenature of love of life. That is common to all living things, and to animals, living
by instinct means living by nature. When their instincts and nature were not
separate, human beings also led their lives naturally, indistinguishable from instinct.
Human nature pursues “conformity between desire and virtue” where one’s pursuit
of selfish desires brings moral virtue to others. A child preserves the myth of such
spontaneity. But as one’s intelligent discernment to tailor and control the world
arose, one’s instinct and nature separated, and, being imbued with personal
self-consciousness, one came to read the world subject-centered. Consequently,
quarrels over all kinds of honor, power and wealth occurred. One should restore
one’s “brightness” (Ming) to see the truth of the world rightly, rather than store up
knowledge and ideas to defeat others and control the world. “Brightness” is an
intuition that enables an immediate perception of the reality of the world as it is
without dichotomous classification of the world, as if into brightness and darkness,
or the true and the untrue. “Brightness” is a mirror that detects the truth of the
world before one’s reason tells it. The mirror does not show the world
subject-centered, but reflects it just as it is. Only by having one’s mind empty with
all intelligent discernment and excessive greed let go of, can one have the
“brightness” to see life in harmony with all things, and can lead one’s life
naturally, in pursuit of the conformity between desire and virtue.
