Exchange of Gases(oxygen and carbon dioxide)
Between a living organism and its environment
Pulmonary Ventilation - Breathing, the process that moves air into and out of the lungs
Internal Respiration ? Process by which an exchange of gases occurs between the blood and the cells of the body
Cellular Respiration ? Actual use of O2 by cells in the process of metabolism

Respiration-Muscles

Primary Muscles
- External Intercostalis, Diaphragm
- Control the size of the chest cavity
Accessory Muscles
- Scalenes, SCM: raise the upper two ribs
- Levator costarum, Serratus: raise the other ribs
- Trapezius, Pectorals, Serratus: fixes shoulder girdle

Respiration-Ventilation

Inhalation or Inspiration
- Moving air into lungs
- Occurs as the thorax enlarges
Exhalation or Expiration
- Moving air out of the lungs
- Results from passive relaxation of inspiratory muscles
and the elastic recoil tendency of the lungs

Respiration-Ventilation

Forceful Expiration
- Internal intercostals and Abdominal muscles
- Contract and depress the rib cage decreasing the depth
