교육공간의 의미와 조건

``교육현장``이라는 말이 있다. 이 말은 학교를 비롯한 삶의 곳곳에서 교육이 가시적인 형태로 전개된다는 의미를 담고 있다. 그러나 거기에는 어떤 이론적인 근거도 없으며, 단지 관례에 뿌리를 둔 습관적 어법이 적용될 따름이다. 가시적으로 볼 때, ``교육현장``은 ``정치현장``, ``경제현장``, ``사회현장``, ``문화현장``과 전적으로 동일하다. 그들은 외형상으로는 조금도 구별되지 않는다. 공간에 대한 일상적 인식에서 생기는 이런 혼란과 오해는 그 차이를 식별할 수 있는 각각의 고유한 맥락을 이론적으로 확인하지 않고서는 극복되기 어렵다. 교육의 독특한 공간은 여타의 범주와 차별화할 수 있는 자율적인 인식의 토대를 구축할 때에만 포착될 수 있다. 이 조건에 따르는 교육공간은 ``가시(可視)의 공간``이 아니라 ``가지(可知)의 공간``으로 규정되며, 그 독특한 실재는 우리의 일상적인 관찰의 범위를 넘어선다. 이 글에서는 교육의 공간에 대한 기존의 선입견을 비판하면서, 교육의 자율적 특징이 반영된 공간의 고유성에 대해서 탐색해 본다.

영어 초록

What is space in education? It differs with what we think the education is. The space in education is commonly viewed as identical with the inner place within a boundary of school system. With the influence of life-long education it tends to be extended further to other life settings like home, office, museum, library, theatre, and so on. However, there are no theoretical evidences in those thinking, since they apply a commonsensical belief about education to the topic of space. What they call "educational field" is the same site as political, economical, social, cultural one in fact. Henceforth, it fails to shed light on any valid and unique aspects of the space in education, rather mistakes to hide and distort it. We assume that education could not be observed with our naked eyes. Accordingly, the space proper to it is invisible to ordinary sight, either. Therefore, we should first establish education as an independent and autonomous realm of life with its unique character and intrinsic value if we are to figure out the specific mode of space relevant to it. Sang-ho Chang`s educational theory, newly woven for the endogenous rules of education, equips itself with proper quality for the exploration of space in this paper. Relying on his creative work, I tried to investigate five aspects of the space in education: (1) some premises of educational space, (2) difference between life space and educational space, 3) comparison of educational space with the space of transcendental realms, 4) recurrence of educational space, and 5) limits and possibilities of vertical space in the educational context. These 5 sub topics were discussed in a hypothetical way hoping that they would contribute to rethinking on space in education.
