교육의 발견: <매트릭스>는 교육영화다

한국어 초록

다양하게 해석할 수 있는 작품이 훌륭한 예술작품이라면 <매트릭스>는 단연 뛰어난 영화이다. 철학영화, 종교영화, 해커영화 등등 이 영화는 너무나도 다양하게 해석되고 있고, 덕분에 영화를 보는 재미 또한 풍성하다. 그런데 지금까지 제시되지 않은 시각이 하나 있으니 그것은 바로 <매트릭스>를 교육영화로 바라보는 것이다. 지금까지는 교육영화를 규정하는 방식에 혼선이 있었다. 교육학 이론의 뒷받침 역시 미흡하여 영화 속에서 교육을 찾아보는 데 어려움이 많았다. 그러나 교육이라는 삶의 측면을 소재로 삼아 드러내주는 영화를 교육영화라고 정의하고, 교육본위론이라는 교육학 이론에 근거해 교육을 이해하게 되면 <매트릭스>는 교육영화로 재발견된다. 세상의 진실을 이해하는 데 격차가 있는 두 사람이 만나 교육적 관계 맺기를 통해 스승과 제자가 된 후, 맹렬하게 교육활동을 벌이고 결국 값진 결실을 이루어내는 그 모든 과정이 이 영화에는 극히 섬세하게 그려져 있는 것이다. 정선된 교육학 이론이 있다면 우리는 <매트릭스>를 교육영화로서 색다르게 즐길 수 있다. 또한 역으로 <매트릭스>는 교육이 무엇인지 잘 알 수 있게 돕는 교육자료로 활용될 수도 있을 것이다.

영어 초록

The Matrix is a very unique film. After the movie was shown, fruitful feasts of discourses have followed it. Some assert it is a philosophical, and especially epistemological work, others claim it is a description of Jesus Christ`s life. Also, somebody decorate it as a Buddhist movie, and furthermore there are those that maintain it as a story of computer hackers. There had been numerous studies of the movie as well, and this is expected to continue. However, no one has interpreted The Matrix as an educational film. This paper argues otherwise. It will show that The Matrix is an educational film. So far, the concept of educational film has been confused and misused. Most people call a movie an educational film when it is produced specifically for educational purposes or it is used for education. However this definition is inappropriate since all movies can be classified as educational films. In contrast, some classify movies as educational film when they represent education itself. This way of classification is relevant because it defines educational film by its subject matter, and as a result only a few peculiar type of movies can be regarded as educational films. Nonetheless, there can be another problem: it is the conception of education. Nowadays, most scholars as well as people think that the word education refers to what is related to schooling, or what is referred to in other disciplines such as socialization, enculturation, conditioning etc, or what brings about a desirable outcome within an individual. Yet in these case, those classified as educational films cannot have any common featuresor or attributes. If we conceive educational film as representing education itself, and if we accept the conception of education derived from Sang-ho Chang`s educational theory, The Matrix can be viewed as an excellent educational story. In this film, it can be found that the burning desire to find one`s educational partner, the beginning of the educational relationship between Morpheus and Neo, passionate activities of ascending and descending education of these two men, the end of their educational relationship, and their great educational accomplishment. We can see education itself from its beginning to its end in detail through this movie. If we have an elaborated theory of education, we can reconceptualize the concept of educational film, and we can declare it as a new film genre. Hence, The Matrix should ranked highly among educational films.
