The purpose of this study is to investigate the status of polysemy teaching inschool grammar according to ‘the 2009 revised curriculum’ (Dec., 2012), and to
suggest alternatives.
The status of polysemy teaching and its associated problems can be described
as follows. (1) Polysemy is mentioned in primary school ‘grammar’ and in senior
high school ‘reading and grammar’, but not in junior and senior high school ‘Korean
Ⅰ’. The content is insufficient and the levels of schools are not taken into
consideration. (2) Polysemy-related content appears in the following circumstances:
2 primary school textbooks, 7 junior high school textbooks, and 7 kinds of ‘Korean
Ⅰ’ and 6 kinds of ‘reading and grammar’ in senior high school textbooks. However,
the level of the two primary school textbooks is unrealistically high and the seven
junior high school textbooks do not treat polysemy separately. In addition, the six
kinds of ‘reading and grammar’ at senior high school level have little in common.
(3) The description of polysemy in the textbooks is arbitrary because of its vague
description in the curriculum.
The following alternatives are therefore suggested. (1) ‘Concept learning’,
‘semantic extension learning’, ‘semantic structure learning’, and ‘asymmetry learning’
should be set as basic elements of polysemy teaching. (2) A four-level hierarchy
of the elements of teaching content should be established, i.e., at upper primary
level, general junior high school level, and general and intensive senior high school
level. (3) An exploration model should be established, based on the ‘asymmetry’ of the central meanings and the extended meanings of ‘buy’ and ‘sell’ in the
intensive course at senior high school level.
