The purpose of this article is to address the causes of and solutions to the pauseresponse between the teacher’s utterance and the student’s response in the Korean
as a second language classroom, which can lead to the break-down of the class’s
flow. It will also address strategies that the language instructor can utilize when
asking questions to the students.
A discussion was held regarding the different reasons for student response lags,
and what sort of strategies could be used to address the various lag causes. In order
to aid in this discussion materials regarding previous research paper’s observed
transcription materials were collected. Using this as a base, solutions to pause
response in the classroom setting were developed and 5 types of questioning
strategies were developed. These strategies include strategies for eliciting involvement,
strategies for giving sufficient response time and examples, strategies for
articulating, strategies for grammar teaching, social-affective strategies.
Also, to insure that these strategies reflect the real state of the Korean as a
second language classroom, a survey was given to teachers currently working in
the field to gather their response to the proposed strategies. The results of this
survey reflected that these Korean language teachers are currently utilizing strategies
for giving examples and sufficient response time, and articulation in their classes.
Also, these instructors had similar preferences regarding the suggested strategies.
Based on these results we can conclude that the strategies that we have emphasized
based on our research have real meaning in the field of teaching Korean as a second language.
