1. Context
Learners studying with this material are ninth-grade students in one of the public schools in Seoul, South Korea. Most of the classes consist of 25 students or less and their overall English proficiency level is intermediate high. They have studied English since they were the third grade in elementary school, and thus they are able to converse with ease and confidence when dealing with the routine tasks and social situations. They could narrate and describe in all major time frames using the connected discourse of paragraph length. However, their speech sometimes represents several features of breakdown, such as an inability to maintain paragraph-length discourse or a reduction in breath and appropriateness of vocabulary.
2. Place in the Curriculum
In the previous lectures, students learned cultural differences around the world as well as variation of speech based on races. What they learned is directly connected to connected speech and speaker variation, two main topics of this lesson.
