영어 초록
Yu Mong Chon Cha (牖蒙千字, The Thousand Character Series. Korean Reader) represents a textbook, the collaborative work of Korean Protestant missionary James Scarth Gale (Korean name: 奇一, 1863-1937) and his aide Lee Chang-jik (李昌稙, 1866-1936), tailored for the curriculum of Kyungshin School and Jungshin Girls’ School. Encompassing four volumes, this pedagogic series spans an extensive array of subjects, ranging from natural and social sciences to Western history, notable Western figures, Western literary works, and materials pertaining to Korean Classical Chinese literature. The compilation was driven by the necessity to acquaint formal education students with a spectrum of knowledge pertinent to Chinese characters, Sino-Korean words, the mixed Sino-Korean script, and Classical Chinese, reflecting the linguistic requisites of the Enlightenment era in Korea. This scholarly investigation delves into the Yu Mong Chon Cha series, elucidating its structural and compositional framework, the triad of literary styles it incorporates, and the historical context of stylistic innovation undertaken by Protestant missionaries, as manifested throughout the series.
