A town chronicle(邑誌) is a reference book about a particular region.Originally, the town chronicle generally organized the region to help the chief
govern it smoothly. However, two types of Gyeongju town chronicles(慶州誌),
published by the Japanese during Japanese opium policy in Korea, had completely
different chapters from prior town chronicles. The former town chronicles were
comprised of history·culture, economy, politics·administration·military, nature,
people; on the other hand, the latter Gyeongju town chronicles had only a chapter
on history, which focused on the ancient Silla dynasty. The first Gyeongju town
chronicle by Kimura-sizuo(木村靜雄) published in limited edition by the time
Derauchi-masadake(寺內正毅), governor-general, visited Gyeongju. The second
town chronicle of Gyeongju, by Okuda-yasushi(奧田悌), was sold as an initial
modern guide book which informed outsiders about Gyeongju, as Gyeongju
tourism increased. The compiler of the second chronicle was a capitalist and one
of the three Japanese antique collectors at the time. He was thus highly concerned
about Gyeongju, as he sought the antique.
Gyeongju was transformed during Japanese opium policy in Korea. The former
capital underwent improvements such as newly constructed roads and train tracks.
Maintenance of a traffic network into the city center was also made in preparation
for tourism. Developing the former capital was an expedient of Japanese colonial
rule, and effectivly publicized Gyeongju to other nations. The popularity of field
trips and tour stamps in Gyeongju is a result of that time. Gyeongju was
symbolized as the preserved place of the former capital of the Silla dynasty. The
Japanese not only resided in Gyeongju, but they also inserted advertisements about
their shops in the Gyeongju chronicles to promote their own profit. Outsiders
coming into Gyeongju by the train and newly constructed roads were able to see
Gyeongju arranged and preserved by the authorities. They most likely used
Gyeongju chronicles as guide books.
