Whenever most Indians are confused about their own identities between white and Indian society, they try to overcome their difficulties by drugging, drinking, and standing together against the white world. Sherman Alexie’s story, “The Toughest Indian in the World” takes place around Spokane and on the way to an Indian reservation. In the reservation, Alexie represents the Indians’ miserable history since “Christopher Columbus’s discovery of the new world” and uses his capacity for humor as a means to face sadness, poverty, and estrangement (Feldman 128-129). Alexie’s ironic humor is plainly shown in the story when he makes a fool of the white people. For instance, when the narrator asks his girlfriend, Cindy why she never dates white boys, the answer she had was “white guys bore her.” When Alexie describes Cindy, as a white woman who dates only brown-skinned men, he signifies that white people are not always superior to Indian people. The main conflicts of the story arise when the narrator meets a hitchhiker whom the narrator believes might be the most fearless Indian in the world. Basically
