The key issue in theological anthropology is the concept of the image of God; this is due to at least two reasons. First, to speak of human beings as created in the image of God is to emphasize our distinctiveness from other creatures. Genesis 1 tells that human beings only were created in the image of God, while animals were created according to their own kind. Thus, human beings are unique, distinct from the rest of the created order by virtue of being made in the image of God. Second, the image of God is the essential determination of our humanity in its original condition. Therefore, this study will help us understand what out nature was intended to be as originally designed by God and will present us with a picture of the goal of the Holy Spirit’s sanctifying work in our lives as believers.
Scripture explicitly shows that humanity has been created in the image of God. The concept is mostly dealt with in Genesis: 1:26-27; 5:1-3; and 9:6. The first chapter of Genesis teaches the uniqueness of the creation of man.
