The supermarket industry has traditionally operated at very low yields. There were supermarkets in various positions, from premium companies such as Whole Foods to discount markets such as ALDI, but they were all struggling. Two thirds of sales came from perishable items. Supermarkets' share of U.S. grocery sales fell to 51 percent in 2011. It was a big drop compared to two-thirds of the nation's food sales just a decade ago. Supermarkets lost its seat as large discount stores, warehouse clubs, and pharmacies focused on selling food.
