본문내용
The belief that a higher degree leads to well-paid jobs became a standard commonly upheld by many. Consequently, many young adults today strive to achieve higher degrees to secure higher salaries. Moreover, jobs that previously required lower level of degrees now call upon for candidates with higher degrees (Gerald W. Fry, 1981, p517).
This phenomenon emerges in the modernisation process. The initial stage of modernisation requires the certification of higher education such as secondary school certificates, bachelor degrees and various diplomas. People who acquire such form of certificates are subject to salaries fifty times higher than those earned by average people. (Dore, 1976, p23)
For this reason, many parents began to send their children to higher education institutions. More and more people gathered to schools in pursuit of educational certificates while the number of available certificates was fixed. Ronald Dore(1976) and Marry Milner(1972) call this phenomenon ‘the diploma disease’ (Gerald W. Fry, 1981, p517).
