The principles of adaptations
Two basic approaches of adaptation: faithful or betrayal to the book
1) The integrity of the original work should be preserved.
- Voice-overs of the actor reading are included in Robert Bresson`s film.
- John Huston whose own films include adaptations of novels says that "I don`t seek to interpret, to put my own stamp on the material. I try to be as faithful to the original material as I can."
- Andre Bazin contended that "it is those who care the least for fidelity in the name of the so-called demands of the screen who betray at one and the same time both literature and cinema."
- Francois Truffaut criticized Jean Aurenche and Pierre Bost whose ideal was "inventing without betraying"; but Truffaut demonstrated that their plans would have little invention-it seemed to Truffaut that Jean and Pierre turned out the same film no matter how varied their sources- and a great deal of treason.
