Peer pressure is one thing that all teens have in common. However carefree life may be, nobody can escape it. What on earth are the effects that peer pressure influence on students and how can the peer pressure be powerful? Can people say that peer pressure is desirable or undesirable? What do you think of the peer pressure?
Peer pressure has considerable powers and both positive and negative effects on learners.
In the first place, peer pressure enable students to learn something through observation and imitation. Provide that one student get praised by a teacher thanks to picking up some trashes. The student becomes a other students` good role model to imitate, and other students will know if they do the same good conduct, they would receive praise equally. In contrast, let`s suppose another friend was scolded for bothering his or her friends. Then other students who observed the scene will think bothering other people is bad behavior which they shouldn`t imitate. In this way student judge that what is the good or bad behavior to be reinforced or not to be reinforced. Through this process, students acquire essential rules of a school or a society .
What can teachers do to prevent the negative aspects of peer pressure? Above all, teachers should inform that all teens experience peer pressure, and peer pressure is a rite of passage for growth. If teachers do that, students will not have low self esteem, feel lack of confidence, aware uncertainty about ones place within a given peer group, and have fear of one`s peers. What is more, these teachers` advice will protect the atmosphere of the classroom from becoming competitive. Teachers also should provide informations about what is good and bad behavior to students to help them not to commit an irregularity.
Role of students is also important. How successfully students handle peer pressure depends a great deal on how they feel about themselves and their place in the world. Therefore, students should accept peer pressure positively. They also should express their opinion to their friends definitely not to be juvenile delinquents. Students may get a bit of teasing at first by other friends who are in the same group ,but they
