1. Introduction
Definition of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) technology is a networking technique which provides seamless high-speed, low-delay, multiplexing and switching networks for the transport of all types of user traffic (such as voice, data, and video) either locally or over a wide (global) area. It is also a new networking technology that has come into a significant place in the networking industry. Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) has been accepted universally as the transfer mode of choice for Broadband Integrated Services Digital Networks(BISDN). ATM is designed to provide fast packet (cell) switching over various types and speeds of media at variable rates from 64 kbps to 2 Gbps and beyond. ATM can handle any kind of information (voice, data, image, text and video) in an integrated manner. ATM provides a good bandwidth flexibility and can be used efficiently from desktop computers to local area and wide area networks.
