The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of presence on learning performance in onlinelearning environment. By reviewing 47 studies with 150 effect sizes published between 2011 and 2016, we
performed meta-analysis to provide a comprehensive synthesis of recent research findings of presence. In
this study, presence has four sub-categories, including social, cognitive, emotive, and teaching presence.
Learning performance is classified into 3 areas : cognitive, affective and meta-cognitive domains. The
meta-analysis results indicated that the overall effect sizes for presence on learning performance were large
and statistically significant. The magnitude of the effect sizes of presence subcategories on learning
performance were found to be large from cognitive, teaching, emotive and social presence in order.
However, there was no significant difference among the subcategories of presence on learning performance.
The effects of presence on different learning performance types were found to be statistically difference.
The effects of presence on affective and meta-cognitive learning domains were statistically larger than its
effects on cognitive domain. Last, the research findings on moderating variables explained that researches
published in Korea yielded larger effect sizes than those published in international academic journals. Also,
in terms of measurement of learning performance, research measured learning performance using
self-reported survey demonstrated large effect sizes than using test scores.
