영어 초록

In his recent book, Kant on God, Peter Byrne distinguishes
between three types of grace- distributive, transforming, and
justifying grace- that operate at various points in Kant’s writings
and claims only distributive grace "does any real work" for Kant.
Kant’s appeal to the other two types, mainly in Religion, sets him
apart from typical Enlightenment deists, but, so Byrne claims, they
are wholly non-essential to the concerns of Kant’s Critical system
as such.
In the present essay I shall challenge this claim by examining
how Kant himself attempts to solve three problems that arise out
of the account of divine grace he defends in Part Two of Religion.
Kant’s treatment of these three problems demonstrates that the
grace Kant appeals to in Religion is quite different from the
distribution of happiness in proportion to virtue that plays such a
crucial role in the second Critique.
Kant’s response to all three difficulties is grounded in a
perspectival understanding of what is entailed by religious belief: to
be a genuinely religious person, according to Kant, is to believe in
a God who perceives the spatio-temporal details of human beings’
lives as a completed whole, from the "noumenal" perspective. By
contrast, we human beings are limited to the "phenomenal"
perspective, whereby we perceiveonly specific deeds and choices in
isolation from the totality that makes up a person’s moral life.
Provided religious believers keep in mind that they cannot have
knowledge of the noumenal and remember that human judgments
regarding a person’s ethical condition must be made onlyon the
basis of the phenomenal evidence at hand, each of the three
difficulties can be overcome. That is, the potential obstacles that
threaten to prevent a morally sensitive, rational person from
believing in divine grace can be cleared away, provided we
interpret grace within this framework a framework – that is wholly
consistent with (indeed, determined by) Kant’s Critical philosophy.
Properly understood, grace is not to be dismissed as an
aberration or a sign of undue weakness, but affirmed as the goal
of Kant’s whole argument in Religion, and arguably also of the
entire Critical system.
