Introduction
In order to successfully acquire a second language, a learner must oftentimes overcome personal and transactional barriers presented by two cultures in contact. Beyond its instrumental function, L2 also creates an unfamiliar cognitive context within which ESL learners must interact and immerse in. In this process of L2 acquisition, the learner`s L1 and associated collective identity are stimulated and sometimes amalgamated into the target language. In particular, incorrect loanword adaption, primarily categorized as `Konglish` is often cited as a foe of the nation`s ESL system along with out-of-context usage of words and phrases.
In an age of global communication, there is a growing recognition that this type of contextual and semantic inaccuracy is a serious liability. At best, such rampant and indiscriminate use of incorrect English may be humorous. Upon more serious introspection, the persistency of such a phenomenon indicates a comprehensive failure in the transfer of contextual and semantic meaning within the present ESL system. In an attempt to prescribe an enduring remedy, this paper presents case examples which indicate causes stemming from sociocultural and historical factors.
