Why Chinese Opera?
Chinese Opera was started in the late 19th centuries and originated from Anhui and Hubei opera. Under the influences of other opera, Peking Opera became to be the national form not only in the mainland China, but also in the other places such as Hong Kong and the United States. In May, 2001 UNESCO declared Kun Opera one of the 19 masterpieces of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity. After the success of Kun Opera outside of China, Peking opera and Kun opera had been performed together and both stand for national opera status.
One of the reason why Peking and Kun Opera and Chinese music became to be famous in the world was the movie, Farewell My Concubine (覇王別姬, 1993) directed by Kaige Chen. The performance in the movie by the people who were borne with pain moved people from the bottom of heart as it showed the sorrow of Chinese people especially in contemporary times. Actor’s tear behind the mask was the symbol of Chinese contemporary history against Japanese and European countries.
