‘191 millions.’ This is a numerical statement of migrants world wide in 2005. Migrants comprise 3% of global population which means one out of thirty five people in the world is migrants. This mass migration is not an incident suddenly emerged lately but a dynamic, evolving phenomenon from the past. In this essay I’d like to examine the cause and effect of migration in the period between 1820 and 1913, and the effect it has on modern economy.
Emigrant population from Europe during 1821 to 1915 was about 46 millions while contemporary international immigration was over 51 millions. Before 1880 most of the emigrants came from northern and western Europe mainly from British Isles but after that date the majority came from southern and eastern Europe chiefly from Italy. When it comes to international immigration, 62% of the total entered the U.S., 9% Argentina, 8% Canada, and so on.
